"How are you here? I thought you were dead!"
Roman scoffed at that. He looked to have been badly beaten, with a split lip and a black eye, but otherwise alright. Did Samson and Triton just let him go?
"I'm pretty sturdy, it takes more than two men to kill me." Roman stated. "At least more than those two."
"You look pretty rough. What happened after I got away?" I asked.
"Yeah, well, you should see the other guys." He started, "they look fine, just beat the tar outta me until Garrick caught up."
He tried to smile but ended up with a wince.
"Once he found us, I was told, in no uncertain terms, I was no longer welcome in their 'gang'. Which is fine with me, Garrick isn't who he was when I joined up with him. He's not fighting the good fight anymore."
Before I could even ask what the 'good fight' was, Roman got a far off look in his eye and continued his tale.
"Our mission used to be about bringing back the nymphs, and with them, balance to the world. He was always ambitious like that. But then, it was like he was poisoned. Not physically, mind you, but poisoned in his mind. He became obsessive. He started getting all these grand ideas and crazy plans to overthrow your father and take back the kingdom. It was like he was bewitched.
"Samson and Triton never seemed to notice, or maybe they just didn't care. They didn't know Garrick like I do. Well. Like I did. It used to be just me and him, I miss those days."
Roman seemed to snap out of it and looked back at me.
"No point in reminiscing. What's done is done."
What!? He's going to drop all the information on me and then just move on?
I opened my mouth to ask a question, but Roman shot me down with a glare. Guess we're not gonna talk about any of that anymore.
"Norah! Another round!" Roman called out.
At some point during his story, Norah had stopped glaring at us and started serving other patrons.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll get to ya!" She replied.
"So... how do you know Norah?" I asked him.
"Oh, I grew up in this village. I know most everyone here." Roman explained. "Norah and I grew up together."
"Sure. That's one way to put it." Norah said as she put down our drinks. "Another way would be: we're twins. But someone here is too embarrassed to admit that."
Looking over at Roman, I saw he had turned bright red.
"Norah!" He exclaimed.
"Oh! My brother! The hot shot of the hamlet! Ashamed of his sister, the barkeep. If I had a 'respectable' job, would you be proud? If I had gotten married and had kids?" Norah asked.
