(S1) episode 1 part 9

"Ugh, nothin' but nerdy magazines." Dirk complained, tossing a magazine for a cosplay convention behind him that nearly hit Quint as he walk behind the large boy's chair.

"Jack and Y/N have had plenty of time to acquire the needed fuel. Where are they?" Quint asked as he looked around with his binoculars in a panic. He didn't expect an answer from Dirk, but he still wanted to voice his concern.

"Do you do this every time they go shopping?" Dirk groaned, "cause that's gonna get old, real fast."

Finally, Quint spotted Jack and Y/N running up the street and smiled, but his relief was replaced with fear when he spotted a large monster right behind them. Dirk saw it too and stood up, a bit frightened as well.

"Behind you friends! Danger level: delta!" Quint shouted. Y/N laughed a bit and Jack assured him it was whatever was below delta and that he was a nice monster as the the three entered the yard.

"His name is Rover!" Y/N shouted happily as the two set their canisters of gasoline down in the grass.

"Rover?" Quint and Dirk looked at each other confused.

Rover grabbed a tire from a pile in the yard and began to chew on it as Jack described several of his features, mentioning it was the first friendly monster they had met.

Dirk quickly climbed out of the tree house while Quint called from the deck.

"Y/N, Jack, if you're not acting against your will, say the name of the first movie we ever made as a group!"

"Attack of the Killer Yo-Yo!" They said in unison.

"That is lame-o," Dirk rolled his eyes before turning to the mutt monster and saying with a baby voice, "but this is awesome! Look at you!"

He began to pet Rover who flopped over on his back, enjoying the attention.

"It's not just awesome, it's a feat! Get an awesome pet. Feat complete!" Jack laughed as Quint came down from the tree house to see the dog-like beast. He was a bit worried but figured there wasn't really much he could do as everyone already seemed pretty set with having the monster dog as a pet.

"And we got the gas, so we can head out and find June now." He added as he picked up both cans and moved towards the truck.

"But first." Y/N glared at the boy.

"Right." Jack chuckled nervously before taking off into the tree house.

"What's so important about June anyway? Is she a doctor or a ninja or something?" Dirk asked, continuing to pet Rover.

"I think he likes her, as in like-likes her." Quint whispered, though Jack heard him from the ladder. Quint wasn't very good at whispering.

"I can hear you! You know!" He shouted from the ladder. Y/N snickered a bit and filled up the truck's gas tank, tossing the empty canister and extra full one they hadn't used into the box attached to the bed of the truck. They then walked over to the two boys standing beside Rover. Jack went inside and came out moments later. He came out with a hoodie on and his shoulders noticeably slumped. Quint immediately knew why but Dirk looked at him a bit confused. Y/N gave him a 'don't ask' look and he shrugged, not caring enough to have to deal with the look Y/N was giving him for an answer.

"Rescuing is what heroes do. And I'm a hero now, so let's go." Jack said as he jogged towards the group. Dirk stood up, no longer petting Rover. The dog got up and returned to his tire chewing as Dirk began to speak.

"Uh, you know, it's been weeks since I seen her. So..." He began. Quint looked at him sadly, knowing Jack wouldn't like the idea of June not having survived very long.
