I'm sure you've heard the legend of the Gods. A story of betrayal, 2 brothers who were as different as day and night and yet had one of the strongest bonds in existence. They were torn apart by jealousy. Or at least that's the version of the story everyone knows.
There was the God of creation, Leki and the God of destruction, Obi. However, the abilities to rule over the very fabric of this world came at a cost. Each brother had a curse.
Just like them, their curses were opposites as well. One would never depend on anyone, while the other was always dependent on everyone.
Obi was given control over half the elements alongside power over death itself. His curse was to forever remain alone. Anyone he grew close to would succumb to a fatal illness. The only one immune to this was Leki and those who walked the spirit realm. Naturally, this led to him being feared. no one wanted to get close to him as they, too, would die soon after.
Leki was given control over the other half of the elements alongside power over life itself. Most creatures believed he carried no curse, this however is untrue. Nothing can be obtained without a consequence. His curse was to forever be dependent on his creations. Every life created would gather energy over their lives, this energy is given to him when they die. He can not steal this energy from his creations. Instead, it must be given willingly.
If Leki does not get enough energy, he begins to lose his immortality. He will slowly become mortal, his power over life weakens, and his grip on sanity goes as well. A tragic end for such a legendary god, huh?
Obi became dependent on Leki's company and kept away from mortals as he'd only harm them. Leki was the only thing keeping Obi sane in his isolated world. Despite this, he rarely ever envied Leki.
Naturally, Leki feared losing both his immortality and sanity. He felt as though his powers had come at a worse cost than his brothers. Unlike Obi, he was forever dependent on creatures he considered lower. Though he didn't show began to resent Obi, not hate - no, Leki never hated him, yet he still resented Obi.
Eventually, Leki came up with an idea: If he and Obi were to combine their powers, they could cancel out their curse's effects. A solution to both of their problems! What could be better? But Obi didn't view it that way. He said that no one should ever be that powerful, power corrupts.
If Obi wouldn't see sense, then Leki could make him. Obi would understand eventually - this was for their own good- wasn't it? Well, it was too late for doubts, Leki challenged Obi for control of his elements.
That very decision led to what they now call 'The Great Sky Clash' a battle that lasted 100 years. Both brothers were evenly matched, and so neither side was winning. The mortals began to get involved in support of the God they thought was in the 'right.'
After 100 years of battle, Obi made a final decision, one that would cost him the war. He believed that the war couldn't last forever and he was right. The mortal plane was being badly affected in the crossfire of these 2 brothers. Obi demanded a meeting with his brother. They were to meet unarmed under the light of the full moon so they could try to resolve this whole situation peacefully. About a hundred years late, but hey, communication is communication.
After a long debate, Obi agreed to give up his elemental control in exchange, Leki would give up his attempts at merging their powers, keeping the mortal plane safe from both of the brothers. Obi held up his end of this deal giving Leki control over every element and to ensure Leki would never be tempted to merge the powers of life and death, he sealed himself away into an isolated plane, one where Leki could never reach him. A realm where he could never again harm anyone.
Leki couldn't believe it. He had been so close to solving both of their problems for the rest of eternity! Except Obi chose to isolate himself forever rather than trusting Leki. Maybe Leki couldn't be trusted, but it still hurt, I mean, they were meant to be brothers.
No one had been around to watch the exchange that ended the war. Only Leki was left to tell the story. Now more than ever, Leki needed his creations to like him. So he came up with a plan. The war was Obi's fault. After all, I mean, if you could even count it as a war. It was more like a... a clash! Besides, none of it would have happened if Obi had accepted Leki's help. If Obi had trusted Leki's judgement from the beginning, they'd both be happy. Or at least that's what he'd tell himself so he wasn't consumed by guilt.
A new truth was soon formed, Leki's version of history. The correct version of history. Only the dead could say otherwise, but they would soon be silenced by new souls. This way, Leki could never go insane. I mean, he was the one who protected the mortal realm ... even if it was from himself. So everyone would love him, and he could go on living.
Leki only spent a further 10 years on the mortal plane before going into his own realm (Arcadia). He couldn't live among mortals without Obi. Obi balanced this world against Leki's powers. With him gone, this realm could not survive. - Like Leki cared. But he wanted to see Obi again, and he'd need to be alive for that -
So Leki made the 'honourable' decision to leave the mortal plane. He could not exist there without ripping it open. However, before he vanished, he too gave up his control over the elements. All of them. The elements went into the land, giving this world control over itself.
How does the 'mark of the gods' come into play? Well, simple. Obi left one hole in his isolation, and each millennium, a creature, was born with his mark. They will be able to contact him without succumbing to the effects of his curse. If the time was right, if the world was ready for it, he'd come out of his self-imposed isolation anders reunite with Leki.
Leki left a similar mark on the world, each millennium a creature is born with their mark alongside wings to 'reach the gods' (he eventually gave Obi's 'chosen' the wings as well in hopes they'd use it to reach Leki and reunite what was lost.) In truth Leki never wanted to be completely alone, he wanted to be with Obi again, to be happy again.
