3 years later
The ship cut through the blackened waters. Your mother fanned herself as you watched the castle grow closer. You sipped on your drink as you leaned against the railing.
Your mother looked at you. "What a beautiful kingdom Y/n."
You look up at her. "It's a shame you're too old to capture the King's attention. I'm sure you're dying to be one of the women who'll press themselves against the poor thing." You say snarkily.
She closes her fan and glares at you through the veil. Mourning clothes.
"I'll have you know Y/n, I brought you into this world and I can take you out." She threatens hotly.
You roll your eyes and tilt your head backwards and drink the rest of your goblet. You set it down on the chair and wipe your mouth on your handkerchief and look up at her. "What's taking you so long?"
She presses her lips into a firm line and you scoff. All bark and no bite. You turn around, your dress swishing as you walk to the back of the ship.
One of the servants stopped and stared at you as you passed. "Princess, do you need anything?" He asks eagerly. "Space." You say, not sparing him a second glance. "R-right." He says flinching under your tone.
As much as you hate to admit it, you were turning into your mother. You don't think you could do much to stop it.
You look at the other ships docking, and you can see everyone rushing excitedly. It was just a man. A man your mother would most likely ruin for you.
Whenever she had you meet someone, it was always for ulterior motives. You weren't excited to meet this budding King.
He was your age when...
The crew members began shouting as they were pulling the ship to the dock.

You looked down at the plank that the greeter had given everyone to walk down on. Your nose wrinkled. You've never walked down on one of these before, what were you supposed to-
"Widows first." Your mother said. She went down gracefully. Maybe you should push her in the water.
I wish she would fall into the water.
No sooner had you thought that, a hatch right under the board opens, thrusting your mother into the water. You looked down. The boy was horrified.
Well someone was getting fired.
Your mother splashed around yelling as the men scrambled for help. You smile and laugh and look up at the castle.
Maybe this place was good.
That the birds sang for a reason, and the sun shined and lit up peoples hopes. The board was reattached and you walk down, surprisingly with no problem. Your mother looked like a wet cat. You laughed.
She looks up at you while blankets were being thrown on her by worried servants. "What?" She snapped.
You bit the inside of your cheek and continued walking until you were off the dock.
You watched the small children run around the May Pole and heard their giggles. You couldn't even remember the last time you were able to do something like that.
"Ugh! Why do I have to wear this?" A little boy groans, trying to take his jacket off. His mother puts it back on. "Because the King has come of age! It's Coronation Day!"
"That's not my fault!" He rolls his eyes and follows his mother after they continue walking.
A hand goes on your shoulder.
