Mara's POV
Mrs. Laurie sat down next to me on my bed as I was writing in my diary, she began to read over my shoulder until I looked up at her.
"Hi."
"Hi, what are you writing in?"
"My diary."
"How long have you had it?
"Before mommy passed away."
"Well, I'm your mommy now, and Mr. John is your new daddy."
"No you aren't. You aren't my mommy or my daddy, I will call you by Mrs. Laurie and Mr. John."
"Very well. Time for bed Mara." Mrs. Laurie said as she took my diary away from me. She set it on the bedside table and clicked off my lamp, my night light brightened my room as she tucked me into bed. She kissed my forehead as wished me a good night sleep, when she shut the door I quickly whipped the kiss off of my forehead. Only my mommy could do that.Mrs. Laurie's POV
I got into bed with John as he was still reading the newspaper, his glasses resting on his nose and his face was expressionless. I sat my pillow up behind the bedpost and sat up,
"John?"
"Mhmm?" he grunted in response.
"Did you know that Mara had a diary before the accidnet?" His eyes shot up from the paper and turned to me, he shook his head,
"No, no I did not. You don't think that she wrote about her father did you?" I nodded,
"I think so. That's one of the biggest pieces of evidence we have to get that bastard arrested for what he did to her. She still has nightmares about his tattoo, the only reason she was taken from him was a bad environment." John nodded at my theory. The court told us that she needed a clean home and a stable environment to live in, but she could go back to her father when he got his addiction cured. Mara's burises were enough to prove it, but the court passes it as "a kid thing". It made my blood curtle and my palms clench. Not to mention, Cole's tattoo of the Mad Hatter, is the main topic of her nightmares. I could not let Mara go back to him. I pushed the covers to my feet and walked to the door,
"Where are you going dear?" John asked me without looking up from the paper.
"To go get the diary." I mummbled as I grabbed the door knob that lead out of the bedroom.
"What if she knows it's missing?" John looked at me, his glasses now folded in his hand and the paper pushed off to the side.
"I'll have it back before she wakes up." I replied. John put his paper and glasses on his bedstand,
"Read it aloud when you get it. I want to hear it too." I nodded and went out to Mara's room.I silently tiptoed into Mara's room and took the pink covered diary off of the bedstand. A noise came from Mara, I froze in my spot and my heart stopped. Mara rolled over to face the wall as she pulled the covers closer to her shoulder, I exhaled and quickly got out before she woke up. I walked back to me and John's room and plopped on the bed with the diary in my hands. I could feel his eyes on me as I opened to the first page.
"My Diary: Mara Bones 8/23/13." I read aloud with a slight whisper in my voice. My hand's trembled as I turned to where the writing began.~
I woke up to the birds chirping outside my bedroom window, the sun made my eyes water when I opened them. I heard mommy and daddy downstairs fighting again, I was told that whenever this happens to stay upstairs until mommy comes to get me. So I waited. I forgot to tell you who I was. Hi, my name is Mara Bones, I am seven years old and I begin 1st grade in 3 weeks. I can't wait! Kindergarden was fun and I had a friend I used to hang out with, but her mommy and daddy made her move away after school ended.
I wish she didn't move away, but, this is my diary and I will write in this everyday to keep track of what happens in my life. When mommy finally came upstairs, she sat on my bed and told me that cereal was ready downstairs for me when I was ready. She told me that daddy went out for a drive around the block and he would be back soon. Mommy's face had red streaks from her eyes and her eyes were all pink with blue irises. I hugged her,
"It's okay mommy." She nodded and wrapped her arm around my back. We stood up and went downstairs to eat some breakfast, daddy walked in a few minutes later.I ran up to him and hugged him good morning, I would only wrap around his legs but he would rub my back. I knew it hurt daddy to bend over and pick me up, but I'm not that heavy. He told us that we would all go out and get some flowers for the flower's bed in the front yard. I jumped up and down, I loved getting flowers.
After breakfast we all got in the car and went to the flower shop about 30 minutes away, but it felt like forever! When we were almost there, mommy and daddy started to fight again. I hated it when they fought, espically when I couldn't get away and I was forced to hear it. I closed my eyes real tight and covered my ears with my hands. All I saw was black and all I heard was the muffled voices from their fight.
The car suddenly stopped and sharp glass flew into the back seat where I was. I opened my eyes and saw the front of the car all smushed together and mommy laying on the dashboard, daddy was hugging the steeringwheel. There was red everywhere and I let out a scream. I saw flashing red and blue lights coming from down the street and sirens howling. The truck in front of us was bright yellow with orange and red.
I looked down and saw my seat covered in sparkling glass and blood, I closed my eyes and covered my ears with my hands.
~
I closed the diary and whipped a tear from my eye, she shouldn't have to go through something like that. John took the book from my and rubbed my back.
"I'm going to go return this before Mara wakes up." And with that, he left. I flicked out my light and slid down my bed and under the covers.
