4. another day another slain
light spilled into the room that smelled like sex, sweat and alcohol.
beomgyu winced, feeling his back throb and his ass sting. his one night stand truly did a number on him. he squinted slightly, looking at the mirror.
fuck, i have to get that cleaned up.
he gently hobbled out of bed, now awake by the amplified pain with every step he took that served as a reminder of the activities he participated in last night.
beomgyu groaned, he had work in slightly less than three hours and he was nowhere near stable working condition. he also needed a change of clothes and grab his laptop for work. plus, he was starving and he knows soobin would have put something together for breakfast by now.
quickly throwing on his sweater and trousers he had worn last night, he headed back to his place.
"you smell like shit and you look like it too. fun night?"
"good morning to you too soobin," beomgyu greeted, his voice slightly hoarse, as he instantly headed for the coffee pot with freshly brewed coffee in it.
feeling the warm bitter liquid coat his dry throat was such a relief as his shoulders relaxed.
"hope you at least had a fun night seeing how you smell like dried cum and alcohol," soobin wrinkled his nose before making slight gagging noises.
"you haven't seen me for a day and you start to insult me like crazy," beomgyu tsked before settling onto the couch beside soobin.
"don't you have work?" soobin asked, munching on the bread he got from the new bakery down the street.
"i have at least another hour and a half to get ready. so why are you at home? no more murders to uncover?"
soobin crossed his legs, huffing slightly, "i have to rewrite my entire script because the new intern fucked it up. ugh. and we got an anonymous tip this morning so now i'm doing my research."
intrigued, "what tip?"
"the victims weren't killed on a whim. our journalist who picked up the phone asked them how the informer knew and it became radio silent and the person just hung up," soobin shrugged.
"tell me if you find anything. this case is quite fascinating."
"hyung can you help me pick up jaemin again? i haven't entered lee sae-ryeom murder entry into the system yet," taehyun massaged his temples, completely tired and annoyed.
it's been a day and a half? he doesn't even know how long it has been but the pressure from higher ranked officers telling him to solve the case had been getting overbearing.
yes, they are six murders deep but how was it his fault that whoever the fuck is going on a killing spree is doing a damn good job at covering up his tracks.
cctvs? completely clean and on a time loop.
dashcams? it's either too dark to see anything or the sd cards are missing.
witnesses? absolutely no one.
yeonjun had even tried to get data about the cellphone signals within a five mile radius of the murders and nothing.
taehyun was running out of options and with the media hounding the police agency for answers, he might just get demoted. he banged his head on his table.
how is there not a single clue to work with?
"yah...yah! kang taehyun!" yeonjun shook taehyun.
taehyun was coming in and out of consciousness in his sleep deprived state. "hyung what?"
"the call centre got a call. someone's following them. it could be–"
whatever desire he had to sleep evaporated instantly, as taehyun started running for the call centre. within the last 6 murders, the killer had killed two people within a span of three days before going on a month-long hiatus before suddenly killing another four within a week.
"put him on speaker," taehyun instructed the new guy who had just joined from cadet school.
soon the entire room was filled with panting noises.
"sir? are you okay? where are you right now?" yeonjun questioned.
"i-i- sun...sunsh–"
"sir?"
taehyun turned to jaeyun, one of his colleagues specialised in hacking and codes, "find out who he is and where he's at right now."
a few crackling noises and loud clang of metal echoed in the room. "you think they can help you? keep dreaming."
"it–it's you! i'm s-sorry. i-i regr-regret everything! i swear!"
taehyun's heart stopped when a loud crushing noise followed by the call hanging up was heard.
"fuck! jaeyun his last location now!" taehyun yelled, as he strapped his gun into his waistband.
"kang da-jin. 35. residency at nam-gu district, daegu. last known location: suseong-gu, near an alleyway beside cafe seine."
cafe...seine?
the gears in taehyun's mind turned and he realised why it sounded so familiar.
"everyone come there as quick as possible. inform the forensics team to come along. yeonjun and i will go first before he can erase his tracks again."
taehyun swore under his breath.
who the fuck contacted the press?
taehyun started to cordon off the area while yeonjun blocked all the journalists from pushing their way near the scene of the crime but it was too late they knew the scene had been contaminated by too many people.
"hello, is it okay if i ask a few questions?"
"fuck what do you–" taehyun pinched the bridge of his nose, letting a small grunt of frustration.
"sorry i'm a little irritable but yes go ahead mr...?"
"choi soobin. soobin would do. have you found the link between the victims or is the process still ongoing?"
taehyun frowned, confused at what this soobin guy was asking him.
"we received an anonymous tip that the murders may be intentional and have motive instead of the current theory that its a psychopath on the loose," soobin explained.
"no one bothered informing the police of this?" taehyun snapped. "sorry again."
soobin just smiled apologetically, "we thought such a tip would have gotten to the police first."
taehyun sighed, "thank you. i'm just wondering who called the press here?"
soobin shook his head, "we don't know. everyone here got an anonymous call to show up here."
taehyun walked back into the crime scene heading for the leader of the forensics team.
"any clues?"
"so far everything we've collected seems to be contaminated with many fingerprints mainly looks like its from the press. we saw a few of them poking around the body. we'd have to run a few tests to see anything out of the ordinary but it's as usual. nothing at all. this time however, modus operandi seems to be a straight stab into the chest. usually he lets them bleed out but he must have been in a hurry to just get the kill over with."
taehyun kicked the trash can nearby out of frustration.
i'll catch you one day.
