For the next few days, we would meet up with each other behind the pizza shop and talk. it really entertained me, and I had someone to share my feelings with. And he listened to very word I said.
And that's all we did. We would sit and talk. Until this one day.
"Hey," Ash nudged me with his elbow after his stomach loudly grumbled. "Wanna know how to steal some doughnuts?"
"Now hold on a minute," I raised an eyebrow. "How do you—"
But it was too late. Ash had already grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the corner we were sitting in.
...
"I can't believe we just did that!" I giggled, running next to Ash, our arms full of glazed and chocolate-covered doughnuts, faint yells behind us.
"I know! We better hurry. Quick, I know where we can hide," Ash shushed me, signaling me to follow him.
We quickly shuffled over to a passage behind a small business and ducked behind some empty cardboard boxes. Ash and I snickered, hearing the shop owner, who was just previously chasing after us, marching down the side of the road, ranting, and passing us.
I stuffed one of the warm doughnuts down my throat, gasping at how amazing it tasted. It's almost like I forgot what sugar was like. The savory and sweet flavors melted in my mouth, leaving me wanting more.
"Oh man, these are delicious!" Ash said, taking a big bite of a glazed twist. "But not as good as breakfast, though."
"What'd you have for breakfast?" I questioned him, wondering what he had that could possibly be better than this.
"Huh? Oh, it's not that I ate something better at breakfast than these doughnuts, it's that I like breakfast more than anything," he said.
"What?" I scratched my head, thoroughly confused.
"Well, breakfast is far superior to lunch. But lunch is superior to dinner. Though, sometimes depending on what I eat for lunch, snacks can be superior over dinner and lunch," Ash said, in a very steady, earnest tone. "You see, breakfast is obviously the best and most important meal of the day, and—"
I burst into laughter.
"Hey, what's so funny?" Ash asked me. "What did I say?"
"You're hilarious, you know that?" I smiled, covering my mouth. "You seem so unbothered by everything else in the world until it comes to food. When it comes to that, you get all serious, like it's the only thing that matters in the world."
"It is not!" Ash protested. "I think about... other things, too! Like... uh..."
"Uh-huh," I smirked, knowing I was right.
"So what if food is the only thing I think about?" Ash mumbled, all flustered, his face flushed.
"Oh, nothing," I shook my head, chucking to myself. "But you know, you're the only person who's ever made me laugh, other than my dad."
"Really?" Ash looked up.
"Yeah," I closed my eyes, leaning against the wall.
I'm not usually this open to others. But somehow, Ash was able to break the wall I was holding up.
And then I decided to ask something I'd never asked anybody before.
"So, uh, hey..." I looked over at Ash, with hopeful eyes.
"Yeah?" Ash met my stare, chewing on another doughnut.
"Do you think... you'd consider...being my friend?" I asked slowly, scratching the back of my neck. I could feel my face heating up, my heart racing faster with anticipation, wondering what he'd say.
