Louisa's POV
Red Wood Cafe on campus. Elton Esther Royal Academy. Ivory City.
I poured some milk into my coffee and passed the milk jug to my dad.
He took it and put it on the table.
That's just what he does. He takes things he doesn't need when you hand them to him, just to be nice.
Grandpa Julius passed away when he was very young, and I guessed being nice was just his survival instinct in a not-so-powerful wolf pack.
"Dad, what exactly happened on that trip?"
"Well, I thought your mom had already told you..." my dad said.
I had a conversation with my mom a few minutes ago, but it wasn't very pretty.
My dad continued, "We were getting along and everything was fine until Alpha Basil called me. To cut the long story short, our pack will be taken over by a new Alpha. You know, Alpha Zackery from the Hawk Tail Pack."
"But they can't just take over a pack just like that." I frowned and said.
"Well, in fact, they can. They are doing very well and they're willing to buy us out," my dad said. "Alpha Basil said he would move to Dayton City. It's a small town in the midwest, but it's his hometown. And he asked me if I wanted to join him. You know, after my dad passed away, he basically raised me. He's like a father to me... So..."
"So you said 'yes' to him," I said.
"Yeah... I had to... He's an old man now. He doesn't have any children of his own and he can't take care of himself. All your uncles and sisters are in other parts of the country, so they can't take care of him, either..." My dad's voice was getting lower and quieter. In the end, he was basically just whispering to himself.
"But didn't you think you should at least consult mom about this relocation thing?" I asked.
"I know... That's why I wanted to apologize to her. I shouldn't have said yes to Alpha Basil without asking her. But she wouldn't listen to me. She refused to speak to me now." My dad lowered his head and said.
"Mom said she wanted to divorce you," I said.
Actually, what she said was ten times harsher than what I told my dad.
I knew my mom sometimes would say something she didn't mean when she was angry, but even during the heatest moment in her life, she had never once mentioned rejection and divorce in her life.
My dad freaked out, swallowed the lump in his throat, and said, "No... No! I... I will never accept a divorce..."
"Dad, she was just angry at you. I talked her into having a separation from you."
"Separation?"
"Yeah, mom will visit you every week at Dayton City."
"Oh... Well... Separation... That I can deal with..." My dad looked a bit relieved, but he was still very disappointed.
Wolves get weak and distracted when they are away from their mates. Despite not having a mate, I could still tell it wasn't a very pleasant feeling.
"I'm sorry for ruining your award ceremony, Lulita. It's all my fault. Please don't blame your mom and take care of her for me when I'm away. Grandpa Basil is a very old man now. It wouldn't be long before I move back with your mom. And, you're welcome to visit me any time you like." My dad said.
Then, he took a sip of the coffee and burnt his lips.
"Ahh..." He took a gasp and said.
He looked very guilty and painful at the same time.
