IT TOOK HITCH a week to come apologize to me.
I was in the garage tinkering with our lawnmower, knelt down in front of it with an array of tools before me as I tried to figure out what the hell I was doing and sweating buckets while I was at it.
The stupid machine had broken down halfway through mowing the front lawn, and I couldn't get it to work again. I was frustrated and boiling hot from the 98° weather that was supposed to last well into the next week.
The last thing I wanted at that moment was for Hitch to stroll up in her shorts and tank top and her long, long legs.
"What's all this?" she asked as she approached me.
I tried not to look at her. "The damn thing broke down on me."
"Oh. How'd that happen?"
"I don't know. I'm trying to figure that out."
"Well, did you run over something and it messed it up?"
I closed my eyes tightly, feeling my frustration build. "I don't know, okay," I said through clenched teeth, facing her. "Can you stop asking questions so I can focus now?"
She narrowed her eyes at me. "Someone's in a mood today." She strutted over to the bucket Phil and I used to wash our cars, upturning it to sit on.
I eyed her. "What are you doing?"
She shrugged. "I just wanted to chat with you."
"Why?"
She frowned. "Gosh, is it such a sin to talk to you?" I kept eyeing her. "Okay, so I wanted to apologize to you," she admitted.
I was stunned. "'Apologize?'"
"Yeah. You know, for blowing up on you how I did at the party." She set her elbows on her knees, resting her chin in her hands. "I had a lot to drink, and I was really awful to you when you were trying to be nice to me. I'm sorry for that."
I stared at her for a while, shocked. I hadn't ever heard of Hitch apologizing to a person before then.
"Um, uh—it's fine," I told her.
"Really?"
I nodded. "Yeah, and I guess I should apologize for making you feel like I was being intrusive or whatever."
She shook her head, holding up a hand. "No, Jules, don't apologize. You were just being nice and I had to go and ruin it." She laughed to herself, rubbing at her eyes. "Gosh, I'm terrible at this kind of stuff."
