The Promise [Eren Yeager x Fem! Reader]

chapter one

The sweet smell of summer lingered in the air as you looked up to the sunset, admiring the blues, purples, and pinks that danced across the sky. August was approaching, and you were about to start high school. You were determined to really savor this last bit of absolute freedom.

"Y/n, can I tell you something?" a voice said to your left. It was your best friend, Eren Yeager. Usually he interrupted your moments to say something dumb, but this time, his emerald green eyes shone with seriousness and sincerity. You almost reeled back a little in surprise.

"Y-yeah. What's up?"

"I think I'm in love with you."

You felt heat rush to your cheeks as you stared at Eren, wide-eyed. In an effort to disguise your nervousness, you let out a little chuckle.

"W-what? Like, as a friend, right? You love me as a friend?"

Eren laughed a little bit, blush painting his face as he looked down at the green grass you were both sitting on. "No, silly. Like, I think I have feelings for you."

You brought your gaze down to the grass as well, pulling your knees to your chest. You could hear your heart pounding in your ears, and you weren't sure what you were supposed to say. Eren was about to move away to a different school, since his father had to move for work. What was the point of him confessing his feelings if he was about to go away for who knows how long?  

"I know you don't want to say anything, since I'm moving and all." Eren finally broke the silence. "I just had to tell you how I felt in case I never get the chance again. Can I give you something?"

You looked in Eren's direction, but went to lengths to avoid his eyes as you nodded. Eren swiftly reached underneath his shirt to grab the key on a cord he wore around his neck, pulling it over his head as he reached to put it on you.

"W-wait!" You looked up, waving your hands wildly in panic. "Isn't that your dad's? You shouldn't be giving that to me--"

"It's fine." Eren cut you off as he put the cord around your neck. "We're going away, anyway. He's not going to be needing it."

You nodded and gulped as you felt his eyes burning into yours. At this point, you couldn't even think. To add onto your panic, Eren leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on your lips. Though you'd never kissed anyone before, this just felt right. For that single moment, the world ceased to matter. It wasn't important that you were nervous, or taken aback by Eren's sudden confession. It didn't matter that what he said to you that day changed the rest of your life, awakening feelings for him you thought you never had.

After what felt like a million years, Eren leaned away from your lips, a hint of nervousness in his eyes, despite him wanting to act like he was assertive. 

"I'll be back for you, (Y/N). I won't forget you. I promise." He kissed your forehead and stood up, as his father had come to pick him up. 

Just like that, you were convinced you would never see Eren Yeager again.

And now you had his super-special important key.

First day of college. No big deal. You've been independent your whole life, so this isn't new. 

You shook out the buzzing sensation of nervousness coursing through your whole body as you added the final touches to your first-day look. You stood inches from the mirror as you nudged your lashes and applied a lip gloss. 

"You all done, princess? Damn." Your roommate, Ymir, mumbled from outside the small vanity area you shared.

"Yeah. Sorry, just nervous."
