Yujin walked along the sidewalk, his inner child cautious of stepping on the cracks. Today was the last day of school and he couldn't tell if he was excited or not. His bag was full of scrap paper and unused binders from his locker, the weight of it making him have to readjust the straps a few times.Luckily, the walk home wasn't too far. The only downside was the rainy weather upon him. The sky was a light gray, completely covered with clouds. Not very summer-ish if you ask Yujin,
Just as he turned a corner, close to his neighborhood, it started to sprinkle. Within a few seconds, Yujin smelled the musky scent of the fresh rain. He also didn't bother to speed up. What was a little bit of water?
By the time Yujin got home, his hair was flat and his backpack was soaked- also the papers inside, probably. He unlocked the door, jerking his head to the side to move his bangs out of his eyes.
Inside, he was greeted by the smell of freshly baked goods coming from the kitchen. He took off his school shoes and quickly changed into house slippers, grateful his socks weren't wet from the rain that had just gotten worse since he arrived home. Yujin peered around the corner into the kitchen, seeing his mother in front of the stove.
"Mom?" He spoke, finally walking into the room. His mother turned towards him whilst taking her apron off. She smiled, but her happy expression didn't last once she saw how drenched her son was.
"Don't come in here like that! Change. Now." She shooed Yujin away with one hand, reaching to grab a mop with the other. He didn't even notice he was dripping all over the floor.
Quickly, he made his way into his room. Yujin set his drenched bag in the corner next to the door and quickly grabbed some clothes from his dresser. After changing, he walked back to his mother. She seemed more relieved to see him now that he was in dry clothes.
"What's with the.." Yujin glanced towards a plate full of cookies; chocolate chip, his favorite. "Cookies?"
"Can't I just make something to celebrate your final day of freshman year?" his mother took a cookie from the plate, then pushed the dish towards him. He hesitantly picked one from the dozen before him. The edges were a little burnt, but not too bad. His mom wasn't the best baker, but boy could she cook.
"Thanks," Yujin pursed his lips together in a straight line as he smiled slightly.
"So," His mother started, dusting her hands off on a paper towel. "Did you have a good last day?" She drew out her sentence, almost pleading for her son to hold a conversation.
"You could say. I think I'm just glad for it to be over." He looked down at the cookie in his hand, crumbs scattering on the counter. Yujin quickly swept those into the sink.
"I bet," His mother nodded, lips pouting slightly. Her tone and expression changed quickly. "Any plans for your summer break?" Yujin shook his head no, not recalling anything he may have already promised to do.
"I don't think so. I planned on just having the summer to myself."
"What about your friends?" He noticed that she was trying to get to a point, but he continued to play along.
"I guess Ollie is planning on going to this... Summer camp, or whatever." Yujin shrugged, shaking his head. No, Ollie hadn't said anything about that whatsoever, but the chances of it happening were pretty high.
"Wonderful! Maybe you should join him. I'll call his mother right now!" She clasped her hands together, grinning, before picking up her phone from the counter.
"What?" Yujin swallowed his bite of cookie before scrambling to grab his phone also. He realized after putting down each of his pockets that it was in his uniform pants.
While running up the stairs, faster than he thought possible, he almost fell a few times. But it was worth it. Once he got to his room, he grabbed his pants and yanked the phone out.
"Ollie. I am SO sorry." He sent the text to his friend, hearing his mother's "professional" voice echoing from downstairs.
"What do you mean? You didn't do anything!" Ollie sent back almost immediately. But, after a few seconds he started typing again.
"That's perfect! Our boys can go together." Yujin cringed, knowing he was now going to summer camp and his friend was going to be outrageously mad at him.
"Dude. Oh my god." Yujin read the text from Ollie, but he couldn't help but laugh. What a hilarious situation.

"I can't believe this." Ollie sighed, watching as Yujin impatiently waited for the bus to arrive. They weren't supposed to be picked up for another ten minutes, but the younger insisted on waiting early at the stop.
The bus picking them up, three days after freshman year ended, was no different than the usual school transportation. It was just an hour earlier than usual and had more kids who were excited to actually be on a bus.
"Yeah, I know." Yujin sighed, leaning against the metal pole. Ollie sat down on the sidewalk, legs crossed. His mom made him a breakfast sandwich- egg, bacon, and cheese- before sending him off to wait with Yujin. The older kept his oversized backpack in his lap, crumbs getting all over the netted fabric.
"The ants are going to love you today." Yujin smiled slightly, looking down at his friend. Ollie quickly stood up and yanked his backpack away from any cracks in the sidewalk, scanning the concrete for any bugs
"Don't even start." he whined, slinging his bag over his shoulder. Yujin glanced down the road, seeing the blinding headlights of the bus driving towards them.
"Bus is here." He commented, looking towards his friend as he devoured the last bite that easily could've been made into three more. He choked slightly but forced his breakfast down.
"You're stuck with me for the whole summer." He grinned, sliding behind Yujin.
"Well, that isn't so bad." Yujin smiled, squinting and grimacing as the bus came to a stop. The brakes rubbing against each other making a horrid screeching sound. The doors flung open and the two made their way onto the bus.
The start to an eventful summer ahead.
