"Maddie, get down here right now!" I cringed at the sound of my dead name. I didn't want to get up as I was exhausted from lack of sleep, but I did anyway. My relationship with my parents was strained so I didn't want to upset them more than I already have. I threw on a jacket and quickly ran downstairs.

"Coming, Mom!" I suddenly missed the second step and cascaded down the stairs. "Ow..."

"Tch. This is why we don't run down the stairs." My mother looked down at me, stands of wet black hair covering bits of her face. She looked scary.

"Sorry." I groaned and slowly got up. I winced as I stood on my legs. I now have some sort of a bruise.

"Maddie." My Mom's eyes gave me the evilest stare. "I got a call today."

"Oh?" I gulped.

"Wanna know who it was for?" She tilted her head. It was like I was a five-year-old being punished for pushing someone over. I nodded my head slowly, knowing what the call was about.

"It was for an Arthur. Do we have an Arthur living in my house?" She stomped her foot and I shook my head. "Exactly! So, why are we getting calls for an Arthur?"

I shook my head again. "No ma'am."

"Are you sure?" I shook my head again.

"I'm not asking, Maddisen Wilde." My mother grabbed my arm and yanked me up to my feet. "Tell me why...now!"

"It's because-," I began to explain myself, but I was cut off immediately.

"And don't give me that tranny shit!" She leaned in closer.

"W-well as you know I told the teachers that I wanted to be called Arthur and-"

"What did I tell you? Your name is Maddisen! You are not transgender! God doesn't make mistakes!"

"I- I know, Mom! But they call me that now!"

"Whatever... Just tell me why Arthur got this call," she sighed, shaking her head.

"Well, I've been getting bullied at school, and they've been trying to stop it. Yet they can't get the kids to listen."

"Why are they bullying Arthur?" I hated how she referred to me as two separate people. I was one whole person.

"B-because...because..." I wasn't sure how to say this without setting her off again. "...He's...er...trans..."

"Oh my gosh...is this it?" She rubbed her scrunched nose and sighed.

"Yeah...but they won't stop it! They call him names all the time, and they've even started to get physical!" I pleaded with her.

"Well, I think it's obvious that he asked for it," she replied carelessly. My jaw popped open. Asked for it?

"Don't you...?" She stared at me with an evil look, her eyes swimming with insolent torture...

"Well, don't you? Arthur?" A voice pulled me out of my trance. I looked up and noticed my grinning friend, Jeff. "Hey, you listening?"

"Yeah," I replied, "just thinking... What were you talking about?"

Jeff let out a loud sigh and fell back onto my bed. He grabbed my laptop, which sat next to him, and opened it up. "Password again." He handed me the laptop. I took it and unlocked it for him.

"Thanks," he chimed. After a couple of minutes, he showed me a picture of text messages from his brother, Lui. I had recently given Jeff the advice of reconciling with him. After a few days of complaining and crying to me, things were finally starting to heal between those two. "Look! He said he understands and he wants to talk! I'm so excited!"
