"What the fuck happened, Arthur!?" I look up at my Dad from the dining table. It seems he's suddenly decided to drink tonight. Don't get me wrong, he's not an alcoholic. Even if he was, he was a lot nicer when he drank.
"What's wrong, Dad?"
"You're eye! Who did that shit to you?" He stands up off the couch and walks over to me, pausing his big football game---just for me. As I said, a lot better when he was drinking because he was suddenly an amazing person. He called me by my preferred name and pronouns and even cared about what happened to me.
I grin and try to sound cool. "I got a black eye. Just some kids who thought they could mess with me!" I lift my arm and try to give convincing muscles. I get him to laugh.
"Good job for defending yourself! I'm so glad you're my son." He gives me a hug, which rarely happens. I can my eyes watering up, but I hold back tears.
"Thanks! You're the best Dad I could ask for!" I hug him back. After a second, he lets go and watches his game again. I go upstairs to my room and begin to cry.
If only he was like this sober.
It sucks he won't remember that tomorrow...
The sun is blinding when I wake up that morning. I yawn and proceed to get changed for school. It's 11 am, which means I have plenty of time. I showered last night before Jeff came over so I didn't have to this morning.
As I checked my pockets for things, I find the note Tim gave me with his number on it. I shove that into my hoodie pocket. Why was I keeping it?
I threw my dirty clothes in the basket and leave. I plan on eating breakfast in the cafeteria. In the lunch room, they're serving oatmeal for $5. I take mine and sit down with my school friend, Andrew Yankie--- who I call Andy.
"Hey dude," he says, seeing me walk over. I wave my hand and sit down.
"What's up?" He asks me in a mischievous tone.
"Nothing at all, Andy. Just stoked for exams." I give a sarcastic grimace. I am far from happy about exams.
"Actually..." I pull out the piece of paper that was given to me yesterday. "Some dude gave me his number."
Andy laughs. "That's kinda gay, man."
"Agreed," I say as I burst out laughing, though I get serious again "I'm not sure if I should text him or not..."
"Do it! You've been single your whole life, plus you're only 23. I think it's time you have a little fun."
"Really? Jeff, you've heard me talk about him, and said that he was kind of creepy. But, he's been nice and shy towards me."
Andy leaned back in his chair "Creepy how?
"Not sure," I sighed. I took a bite of my food; it tasted like water. I pushed it away from me as my face contorted in disgust. Andy didn't respond to me. We just stood up with our trays and walked away.
A/N: Sorry this chapter is a lot shorter, but it really has to be. I need to start getting into the more heavy stuff. I know I have a little bit of it at the beginning of each chapter, but that's just to show the story up till now. It'll show how Jeff and Arthur met. After that, there will be flashbacks that go into early childhood. I won't explain much for the sake of the plot.
