A/N: I have never in my life worked at a clothing store lmao

Yoshikage Kira. 33 Years Old. What life choices did he mistakenly make in order to be manning a CASH REGISTER right now?

Oh, that's right, he DIDN'T make this choice. His bosses had "suggested" he take the position of Clothing Department Manager in order to fill the vacant space. Now he not only needed to attend required marketing meetings, but also interact with the entry-level younger employees as manager. Dreadful

Speaking of young people, one of them happened to be late today, which led to him having to be at the register.

'That damn new hire...' Kira grit his teeth thinking about them. Something seemed off about them the moment they met, a strange determination that Kira seemed drawn to. As if their meeting was destined to happen.

Staggered footsteps were heard entering, making Kira look that way. "15 -- no, 16 minutes late, Y/N." Kira tsked.

They were breathing heavily, sweaty all over. "I-i'm sorry..." Y/N coughed a bit. "I missed the bus, s-so I had to run." They laughed weakly.

Kira scoffed, shoo-ing them away to go freshen up and clock in. 'At least they showed up.' He sighed, glad to no longer be needed behind the counter.

----

It's been somewhat of a slow day here in the clothing department. A bit odd, considering this is an entire mall but it happens.

Kira was spending quite a bit of time folding clothes that were improperly put down. So much time, in fact, that it was getting irritating. Who the hell was looking through each individual item?

A whiny, irritated voice came from a few feet behind him, confirming who the culprit was.

"Why don't you have this in a smaller size?!" The girl growled as Y/N tried to placate her.

"Yukako, I'm sorry, but that skirt has just been really popular so some sizes sell out!" They said in the best customer service tone they could muster. They were obviously rather intimidated by how aggressive she was though.

Kira supposed this couldn't go on any longer, setting down what he was folding in the current moment to mediate the situation. The moment he stepped between them, the customer seemed to calm down.

"What's the issue?" Kira spoke plainly and briefly. He had an air of calmness that also seemed a little intimidating.

The customer, Yukako, seemed to realize the rude tone she had and took a deep breath to calm herself before speaking.

"You don't have this skirt in my size. Is there any in the back you might have?" She asked, holding the clothing up for Kira to take a look at.

Kira took a moment to ask Y/N if they had checked the back already, but once confirming they had, Kira shook his head, an anger flaring up in Yukako again. She held her tongue as Kira began to speak.

"If there's none in the back then we don't have any. You can come in next week when we get more stock." Kira said, his word final as he put a hand on Y/N's shoulder to bring them to the side.

Yukako let out a frustrated sigh, setting down the clothing she had and simply walking out the store. Y/N hoped that anger wouldn't carry over to when they saw her in class again tomorrow.

Kira let out a soft sigh as she left, noticing the tenseness leaving Y/N as well. He leaned down just a bit, his hand still on their shoulder, and whispered.

"You did well. Customers are just like that sometimes." He gave a slight smile, giving their shoulder a small pat before walking away to continue on with working.

-------------------------------------

Why is this store so short staffed sometimes? Why can't the schedulers have more than two people on a shift? Why did Yoshikage Kira have to be on this STUPID REGISTER AGAIN?!

'No, no... Calm down, you're a good boss. Y/N needs their break, even if it means I have to tolerate being at this counter.' Kira thought to himself as he was ringing up a customer. He told the woman her total, but by the look on her face he already knew what was coming.

"I'm sorry, Shigekiyo, we're going to have to put something back..." She told her son, but he didn't seem disappointed. He perked up and dug through one of his pockets, pulling out a fat change pouch.

"Don't worry, Mommy! I have enough for the rest!" He opened up the pouch and coins began to spill out along the counter. There were so many, it would take forever to count them by hand... Surely the mother would ref-

"Oh, you're such a smart boy, Shigekiyo!" She praised him, then pushed the coins towards Kira. "Surely that's enough, right?"

"Let me just... count this..." He muttered, his voice strained from the amount of anger he was holding in. Never in this life has he wanted to use his stand on a child, but he supposed there was a first for everything.

-----------------------------------

Y/N was able to usher out the last few customers of the night, letting Kira bring down the shutters to lock the store up at 8 pm sharp.

He gave a deep sigh as he put away the keys in his pocket, looking exhausted. He would not ever work that register again if he had the choice.

As he began to walk, Y/N followed behind him. He took a glance at them and it seemed they wanted to say something, so he quirked a brow up to tell them to spit it out.

"Mr. Kira, I'm really sorry for coming in late today..." They said, speeding up a bit to walk next to him. "I just wasn't thin-"

He held up a hand to stop them from saying more, his normally stern face softening just a bit.

"You said you took the bus, correct?" Kira asked.

"Well, I missed the bus but, yes, I do."

"Then do you plan on missing it again?"

"No..."

"And you'll be here on time if you continue to take the bus?"

"Yes, sir..."

"Then all is well." He gave a small pat to Y/N's shoulder again. It was comforting, especially now that they knew they weren't in any trouble. "You're forgiven this time. Just don't be late again."

Y/N nodded, opening up the door to exit the building with Kira. The two went in opposite directions, one towards the parking garage and the other to the bus stop down the street.

"Have a good night, Mr. Kira!" Y/N waved goodbye, making Kira briefly wave back (because he wasn't rude).

But something seemed to stick in Kira's mind about them. That face, that last name... God, even a glance at their hands seemed strangely familiar. He swore he's seen these things before, it felt as though it was on the tip of his tongue. But he shouldn't worry about it. At least not now, when he's coming home to rest. He wouldn't want to be kept up at night thinking about some inconsequential child.
