I'm not cut out for the Games. I know that much. Today is a somber day for our district like all the others, but there's a light that brings joy to everyone. About 150 kids will never have any chance of being pulled from us by the Capitol's cruel hand.
If today ends up being my last day in fourteen, I want it to mean something. With a sigh I roll out of bed and fall on the floor. "Ouch! Mother, did you move my cushion pile?"
"Oh! Sorry sweety! I forgot to tell you I cleaned for the reaping party already," she grabs my elbow and pulls me off the ground, "Now what are you doing up so early?"
"Just going to visit the school. Maybe help with some District twelve or seven stuff." I know my mother knows better than to ask too many questions about the school. Ever since the Peacekeepers had become suspicious of the school, it's not safe to talk about it anywhere.
District fourteen is where the people from other districts get sent when they don't do well with their home districts' principal industry. It's true, you don't have to work the main occupation of your district, however, some people don't have the money to start a bakery or an apothecary.
My mother sends me off with a generous lunch, even sparing a cookie she had bought for the party, perhaps knowing I would share it with Cedar. As I walk to the school, I admire the silence. It's a sad silence, of course, but around fourteen the sound of nothing is hard to come by.
"Hey, you!" a Peacekeeper runs up to me, "Wherer you goin? Dondge ya know the school's closer'd on der reaperin day?" The Peacekeeper was Fennel. He's annoying to converse with, but if you annoy him, his father is the Head Peacekeeper, so it's off with your head.
"Oh, hi! I'm just going to clean up the classrooms for tomorrow," I lie. The truth is that I need to feed the secret residents.
What do I mean by that? Well, District 14 has a rebellion brewing. And I don't just mean a few people banding together, I mean the entire district working together to plan the perfect revolt.
You see, we have a secret compartment to our school where children are hidden from the Capitol. At first, we tried to just hide a handful of kids in the storage room, but one got reaped that year which spoiled the whole plan. That was twenty-five years ago, the forty-ninth year of the games. Since then, we've been, as you might say, 'stocking up' on hidden children. Every time a twin or even a triplet is born, we take all but one child to be raised in an underground secret space. Sometimes, our organization can help a woman hide her pregnancy from the Capitol or fake a still-birth, so she doesn't have to worry about even a single child being taken by them.
We have one hundred and fifty-three kids hidden so far.
Recently, however, the Peacekeepers have started getting more suspicious of the school. We're talking surprise searches every week now.
Eyeing me cautiously, Fennel lets me pass. I breathe a sigh of relief and slip quietly into the school.
I barely have time to turn around before the love of my life wraps his arms around me, scaring the living breath out of me.
"Hey, Silvs," Cedar breathes into my hair. I smile into his shirt. He's about a head taller than me, but it's perfect for us.
"How did you manage to beat me here? I'm always early," Cedar tries to break away from the hug to look me in the eye, but I refuse to let go yet.
Cedar chuckles, "I have a surprise- wait never mind."
I finally break away but grab onto his hands, swinging them between us, "Why can't I know now?" I lean my head on my shoulder and smile sweetly at my Cedar.
"I decided to save it for after the reaping," I know he's just trying to aggravate me; he knows I hate to wait for surprises once I know about them.
I sigh, giving in to his honestly very silly antics, "Let's go feed some kids!"
"Correct me if I'm wrong my love, but isn't that what you were supposed to bring?" Cedar's words worry me for a moment, but I soon remember that they're wrong.
"Nope! It's your turn to bring the food," I frown slightly at the problem at hand; however, I soon smile again. It's impossible not to smile whenever I'm around him. He's the greatest gift God's ever given me, besides his own son.
"Are you sure Silver?" Cedar seems genuinely confused, which makes me smile even more, which I hadn't thought possible, "We should check the well-disguised calendar."
I giggle, know that he's the one who thought of it, "No, it'd be a waste of time. Either way it's better to go together." Gosh, I'm so helplessly in love.
Cedar lets go of one of my hands and leads me back out the door. We walk to the market with my head on his shoulder and chat. Cedar brings up the idea of spending the rest of the day on a picnic by fourteen's famous lake. It's a well-known place for couples to go together.
We're worried about the reaping, obviously, but hardly anyone in fourteen has to take out tesserae. We're not rich, but our district is comfortable. Now that I think about it, since nobody takes out tesserae, everyone's odds even out to the same as the other districts.
In district fourteen, everyone is known for being way over the top caring. It's probably why we have no victors. Nobody has the willpower to kill. Plus, no victors mean we have to borrow a mentor from a different district each year. The rumor is that we got district two this year. I hope they don't expect two perfectly trained killing machines.
When someone is poor in fourteen, they are surrounded by love and care, and they never starve. No one from here would ever let that happen.
Wow, 1,149 words! That's a lot in my opinion, believe it or not.
Cedar is not a real person, sadly; I have never been in love.

Correct my grammar with your whole heart in it! I love to learn and will happily fix my mistakes. Don't be quiet if you see an error! Fact errors count as well.
I will avoid anything that's just from the movies. What can I say? I'm a strict book girl!
