One night, as they were studying in the library, John couldn't take it anymore. He had to tell Eunice how he felt.
"Eunice, there's something I need to tell you," he said, looking into her eyes. "I know we're friends, but I can't help the way I feel. I think I'm in love with you."
Eunice's eyes widened in surprise. "John, I had no idea," she said. "I'm flattered, but I don't know if I feel the same way."
John's heart sank. He had hoped that Eunice would feel the same way, but he had known it was a long shot.
"I understand," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "I just had to tell you how I feel. I hope we can still be friends."
"Of course we can," Eunice said, smiling at him. "You're one of my best friends, John. Nothing could ever change that."
