Macey Wilson tossed the book that she'd been reading onto her desk. She nearly panicked when the bookmark slid from the pages. Macey was about halfway through with it, which was interesting thus far. She wanted to finish it, but she had to get ready. It was already 8:00 and her first class started at 8:30. She was a sophomore at USC. The University of Southern California had been her dream school when she was growing up in rural Ohio. Now at 20, she was quickly making her dream of becoming an attorney to life. Macey had already taken a quick shower before reading another chapter in the book.
The book was titled The Omega Selection. It was kind of a dystopian romance novel. The novel took place in a kingdom named Ruya. The world of the novel was ruled by royalty. All of the royal men were what were known as alphas. Alphas were these massive, strong men. They seemed biologically programmed that way. Only the firstborn man of the royals was an alpha, though there had been some cases where a second alpha prince was born. It didn't happen often. The vast majority of the population of Ruya were betas. Betas were just ordinary people of the kingdom. Betas were even born to the king and queen. Betas could be male or female. No matter whether you were an alpha or beta, the thing you didn't want to be was an omega. Omegas were considered precious, though they might not see it that way. Omegas were reliant on those around them, preferably their alpha mate. Omegas were the weakest among the citizens and they had a scent that sent alphas wild once the omega hit puberty. There were medicines that an omega could take that would stave off their heat, but they were expensive as no one in the kingdom wanted to get caught selling them.
In the world of the novel, once a prince hit puberty around the age of 18, the monarchy would hold a competition. They invited all the eligible women of Ruya to come to the castle. At that point, there would be some tests that the girls would have to pass if they wanted to be considered to become the princess. All this time the prince was keeping his senses open to figure out the omega or omegas among them.
So far Macey had read about Asher Saville, who was the main character, the prince in the story. The competition had already begun and Asher's parents, Antony and Eloise, had invited all the eligible women into the castle. The castle must have been huge because there had been 30 women at the beginning. Macey wondered how Asher kept everyone straight. At the moment he had narrowed it down to 25. That was still such a large number. There were a few women that stood out to him that he spent more time with than the others, and since the novel focused more on Asher than anyone else, Macey didn't know how these women felt about him, though it didn't go into his feelings either. There were four that Asher just couldn't stay away from. Araminta Hargreave, a tall, leggy brunette with hazel eyes. Genivive Blackwood, a shorter blond with dark blue eyes. Saskia De Clare, of medium height, had black hair and ice-blue eyes. Lastly, Halynn Winthrope, of medium height and a bit of a heavier build, had golden hair and brown eyes. By the way that Macey was reading the book, she was sure that Asher was sure that one or more of these women was an omega.
Macey picked up her phone and cursed. She grabbed her books and ran out of her room. She'd been in her own little daydream too long. Now she was late. Still even as she ran on the sidewalk to class she was thinking about the novel and how interesting it was. Sure it was great that she was now on her own and finally chasing her dream, but it got lonely. Macey wasn't the most social person in the world and her roommate wouldn't even talk to her. Macey's only friends seemed to be between the pages of a book. She sighed as she ran. Just once she wanted to be popular and loved, like Asher. Would that be all that bad?
Macey ran off the sidewalk without looking. She was too much in a hurry, too in her own head. She didn't hear the honk until it was too late. The last thing that she saw was the sky as her eyes closed and everything faded to black.
