CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN !
☆
ESTELLA HAD GROWN WEARY from the long journey to terminus, and her feet could carry her no further. deciding to take a much-needed two-day respite, they stumbled upon a small cabin nestled in the woods, far from the train tracks. in the span of a week, the temperature had plummeted, and estella had taken refuge in the corner of the cabin, wrapped in jack's oversized hoodie, a can of beans clutched in her hands.
jack leaned against the door, while ottie rocked back and forth in the cabin's rocking chair. despite their efforts to hunt like daryl, they had come up empty handed. each time they stumbled upon a squirrel, estella found them too adorable to kill.
"are you sure about this two day break?" jack asked, warily.
"we have to be. my legs are hurting me and i have nothing to change into. we're all tired and can barely shoot." estella said, "besides, it'll take us longer if we're trailing like walkers on thirty minutes of sleep every night."
"maybe two days is a little bit long." ottie pushed.
"fine, we'll wait one day and then join back on the tracks, but all of us have to get a full nights sleep." estella warned.
jack nodded. "i'll push the sofa up to the door so nobody can get in, n' we can sleep, set off early in the morning."
"sounds good to me." she shrugged, dipping in her backpack for an apple, throwing one to jack and ottie, too.
ottie finished her apple before joining jack in pushing the sofa against the door. with that done, ottie climbed back into the rocking chair and drifted off to sleep, her head resting on one arm of the chair, legs dangling off the other.
jack took one end of the sofa, and estella took the other, and they all settled in for a few hours of rest.
they woke up after a good twelve hours of needed shut eye, jack being the first awake and waking up estella and ottie so they could get back on the road.
"what time is it?" ottie asked jack as she scrunched up her face to get used to the light coming in through the windows.
"almost one thirty in the afternoon. we slept a whole while." jack scoffed as he shook estella to wake up.
"we must've needed it." she said, getting up to put on her shoes. estella woke up, hitting jack.
"stop shaking me! i had a dream i was on an airplane and you started shaking me! i thought it was crashing, idiot!" she scolded, rolling off the sofa, her curls sticking up everywhere.
