It had been five years since Will Graham retired from the FBI, but his past in the bureau still haunted him every day. He was living a peaceful life in his cabin in the woods, spending his days fishing, taking care of his dogs, and occasionally teaching at the local community college. He thought he had left the world of criminal profiling behind, but he was wrong.
One afternoon, while he was out fishing, he heard footsteps approaching his cabin. He turned around and saw his former colleague, Jack Crawford, standing behind him.
"Will, it's good to see you," Jack said, his voice serious. "I wish it was under better circumstances."
"What do you mean?" Will asked, putting his fishing rod down.
"Hannibal Lecter has been released from prison," Jack said. "He's on the loose."
Will felt his heart skip a beat. Hannibal Lecter. The man who had nearly killed him and who he had put behind bars. The man who had been his friend and mentor before revealing himself to be a cannibalistic serial killer. Will had thought he had put Hannibal behind him, but now it seemed that Hannibal was back in his life.
"I don't see how this concerns me," Will said, his voice calm.
"Because Hannibal has been sending you gifts," Jack said, handing Will an envelope. "We intercepted this package before it could reach you. It's from Hannibal."
Will opened the envelope and pulled out a card. Inside was a handwritten note from Hannibal, written in his elegant handwriting.
"Dear Will, I hope this card finds you well. I wanted to give you a small gift to commemorate our time together. I miss our conversations and I hope we can meet again soon. Sincerely, Hannibal."
Under the note, there was a small piece of paper with a phone number on it. Will recognized the number as the one Hannibal had used to contact him in the past.
"He's trying to contact me," Will said, his voice low. "Why?"
"We don't know," Jack admitted. "But we need your help to catch him before he kills again."
Will hesitated. He had left the FBI for a reason. The work had taken a toll on him and he had nearly lost himself in the process. He wasn't sure he was ready to go back.
But then he remembered the fear he had felt when he had first encountered Hannibal, the adrenaline rush of the chase, and the satisfaction of finally catching him. He realized that he missed that feeling. He missed the thrill of the hunt.
"Okay," he said finally. "I'll help you catch him."
"Thank you, Will," Jack said, relief evident in his voice. "We'll need to move fast. Hannibal is a master at covering his tracks. He could be anywhere by now."
Will nodded, his mind already racing with possibilities. He knew that catching Hannibal would be difficult, but he also knew that he was the only one who had a chance of doing it. He had a history with Hannibal that no one else could match.
"I'll need access to all the case files," Will said, his voice firm. "And I'll need a team."
"Of course," Jack said, nodding. "We'll give you everything you need. Just be careful, Will. Hannibal is not to be underestimated."
"I know," Will said, his eyes focused on the distance. "But I'm not afraid of him."
