Taylor Dupont opened his eyes and found himself facing Pegasus, the city protected by a dome, visible through the private jet's window. It was like a snow globe, a world enclosed in a glass sphere, beautiful but isolated. For people with claustrophobia, it would have been a nightmare, but for Taylor, it was a mystery.
Beside him, his mother, Mrs. Dupont, was lost in her thoughts. A world-renowned scientist, she had fled France after her husband's death to escape the war that was ravaging Europe. Pegasus was their refuge, the last bastion of peace in a world in ruins. It was said that she was working on an invention that could end the war, but she refused to talk about it. The only thing that was certain was that the hopes of the world rested on her shoulders.
Taylor had never been good at studies, unlike his parents. He hated school, wondering why he had to study while his friends in France were struggling to survive. But he continued, for his mother, to try to preserve some semblance of normalcy in a world that had lost all meaning. He had seen how quickly life could change, how an ordinary existence could be disrupted in an instant.
A year ago, he was living a normal life in France with his friends Elena, Marie, Paul, and George. Today, the world was at war, and he found himself in a private jet headed for Pegasus, a city under a dome, in the United States, his father's homeland.
"Where will we be in a year?" he asked his mother.
"We'll be back home," Mrs. Dupont promised. Taylor hoped for it with all his heart.
He was determined to do his best, to fit in, to make friends. He had never been popular in France, but he had always made an effort to get along with everyone. He wasn't particularly tall, handsome, athletic, or intelligent, and he had no special talents. He often became shy, especially after being mocked for his sexual orientation.
But here, in Pegasus, he hoped things would be different.
Mrs. Dupont took Taylor's hand. "Everything will be fine, I promise you," she said. And Taylor, despite his doubts and fears, chose to believe his mother. Because in a world in ruins, hope was all they had left.
