The birds pecked at the crumbs excitedly, chirping and hopping on the ground. All of them were white and small, appealing to the eye.

Alas, they couldn't fly.

Fei outstretched her palms toward the birds with a smile, giggling as their small beaks poked her skin while they ate the crumbs from her hand.

“Hungry?” she asked, her voice full of love and care. “Eat all you want.” Crouched down and offering the birds her kind smile, she looked harmless to them. Instead of eating from the ground, they swarmed around her hand, chirping contentedly as they ate.

Only a few trotted obediently on the ground to have their fill.

Fei was in the backyard of the manor. Though there wasn't much to see, it held a peaceful greenery that she preferred. After asking the head maid, she made it a place for her birds.

Now they were free, living outside the cages. Gradually, the backyard became Fei's favorite place in the whole manor, the only place where she could roam freely without fearing the outcome of being seen by others.

The place wasn't too big, but she was content with that. At least she could gaze at the open sky instead of peeking from her window sill.

She had even planted some of her favorite plants in the corner of the field beside a small pond.

Too focused on her pet birds, she didn't hear the approaching footsteps.

“Mistress,” the head maid called, smoothly catching her attention.

“Maid Bao,” Fei greeted with a helpless smile, unable to stand as her hands were busy serving the birds. “Is something wrong?” She noticed the conflicted look on the head maid’s face and asked in concern.

The older woman's brows furrowed. “There’s something you need to see.”

“Huh?”

...

It wasn’t just something; it was as if he had bought the entire city for her. Jewels, silk clothes, and an array of extravagant items she couldn’t even imagine were sent for her.

Her eyes widened in confusion as she looked to the maids for answers, but they were too awestruck to provide any.

What could this mean? It was the only question on everyone’s mind.

Fei slowly touched a velvety red jewel case, which stood out from the rest of the jewelry.

Seeing this, the head maid spoke up calmly, “The delivery worker specifically instructed us to give this one to you, as per Master’s order.”
