Her light steps echoed softly as she passed down the corridor, the birdcage clasped gently in her hands. Suddenly, a booming thunderclap startled her, causing her to yelp in surprise and lose her grip on the cage, which clattered loudly to the floor.

“Oh my!”

Her heart skipped a beat. Oh no! Her precious birds! She quickly crouched down, completely unaware of the heated gaze that watched her every move.

“I’m sorry. Did it hurt?” she cooed softly to the birds, her voice filled with concern as she hurriedly checked them for injuries caused by her clumsiness.

After ensuring that none of them were hurt, she offered them a sheepish smile and continued to apologize, as if they could truly understand her heartfelt words.

“I won’t let it happen next time, I promise, okay?” she said softly to the birds, her voice laced with sincerity. “Today, you’ll all be staying in my bedroom. Sounds good?” She giggled lightly. “It’s going to rain soon, and I know none of you like it.”

She stood up and reached down to pick up the cage, but as if sensing something was off, she looked up and froze, her eyes widening at the sight of the imposing silhouette of a man.

“...” Her.

“...” The extremely good-looking man.

So what if he was handsome—he couldn’t be more striking than her husband, she was sure.

Wait! A man!

Thief?!

A sudden, frantic thought crossed her mind. They had been staring at each other for a moment too long. Her face flushed as she realized the situation.

“Ah—” She swiftly covered her face, panic flooding her as she realized a thief had seen her. Her mind went blank; her feet felt cold, and her body trembled with fear.

She needed to run, scream, or hide. Yes, hide! With that thought, she darted for the nearest cover, wrapping herself in the curtains like a cocoon.

When she heard someone approaching, she looked up and saw the head maid, her eyes welling up with relief.

“What happened, dear? Are you alright?” The head maid was here.

Fei hurriedly took refuge behind her savior and pointed an accusing finger at the…handsome culprit.

A handsome thief.
