An unexpected Guest

A light knock came on my door.

"Yes?"

"Am I disturbing your study, young sir?"

"Ah, Jeeves," I smiled, turning around on my swivel chair to face him, "what brings you to my room?"

"Your beloved mother inquired about you, and so I came to see you on her behalf."

Jeeves stepped carefully into my room, letting the door close behind him. He had a way about carrying himself, as if he was stepping on clouds, very carefully, as if to not disturb them. You could barely hear his feet over the soft, red carpet that covered the brown parquet.

"What are you reading, if you don't mind me asking?"

He came over to my desk, his hands clasped behind his back, looking me in the eyes.

"Oh," I swivelled back towards the desk, "it's just some philosophy for children, or so its called, it doesn't have a proper name."

"You a fan of the intellectuals, young sir?"

"Maybe?" I chuckled, a feeling of pride rising up within me at the sound of the word intellectuals. Could I really be associated with such a thing?

"I sense some uncertainty, Y/N."

"Hmmm, I suppose. It's just...how do I describe it? I feel like there is more to things than I know."

"More to life, you mean?"

I nodded. "Exactly! Did you realise that as well?"

For a moment, Jeeves' chest inflated as he inhaled deeply. He looked almost like one of the many frogs I encounter on my walks through the garden after it rains. Their throat bubbled up into a sac, yet for Jeeves it was his chest that stood out, as if ready to explode at any moment.

"I did," he finally sighed, "of course I did, young sir. But, if you permit me to say, my age is one, yours is another. That conclusion is quite something to reach at your age, I would say."

"I am 11," I replied.

"10 actually, young sir."

"11 at midnight, same thing," I pouted.

"As you say," he paced slowly to the other side of me, the orange hue of my desk lamp spreading over his body, "but be careful with these books, young sir. Now, I can see it on your face. You're quite upset by my remark, but you must understand. You are still young...these...topics, Y/N, they have the tendency of sucking the joy out of things, don't you think?"

"So what?" I crossed my arms, "better be unhappy but know about the world than happy and know nothing."

Jeeves broke out into a low chuckle, one which, I must admit, bothered me quite a bit. I could feel my temples burning up, yet I could not tell exactly whether it was a bout anger due to him mocking my words, or shame at the idea that this man, our family's valet, had come to these conclusions much before I did, and, due to his age, had come up with answers to many of my questions.

"You say that now, of course, young sir, now when there are many things in your life which can bring you happiness. You can afford an exchange, some knowledge for happiness," he smiled, yet the sadness behind his eyes and lips was apparent.

He looked at me, holding his silence, his eyes slowly moving over my face. His lips parted, as if he wanted to say something but he could not.
