It was an August day in 2010 and I was sitting on a bean bag in front of a TV that was playing an episode of Spongebob. The walls in the room I was in were pink yellow with some other colorful shapes around the room. There were 10 other kids playing with each other or playing by themselves who ranged from the ages of six to eight.

"Y/N? There's a couple here to see you." Tonya smiled down at me with her hand on my shoulder.

I got up, holding her hand as I walked through the room with all the other kids looking at Tonya and I. Tonya worked in the adoption center and she was always sweet to me, and she would occasionally teach some classes.

Tonya opened the door leading us down a hallway that had several doors, leading to the other age groups.

"This couple has been wanting to meet with you for a while now, Y/N. They're very excited to meet you." Tonya smiled down as I continued to hold her hand.

"Really? How long have they wanted to see me?" I asked as I smiled.

"For more than a month now." She would smile and slightly laugh after looking down at me. "They are a really nice couple. They really love each other, both are young. I think you'd like them."

"Good." I smiled, getting excited.

Eventually we made it to a room which had four chairs around a table. I hopped up onto the chair and slowly spun in it as Tonya opened the door for them. A tall man and a shorter woman walked into the room. The man had short brown hair and a short, trimmed beard while the woman was short with blonde wavy hair that was short. They both were smiling, seeing that I appeared to be happy.

"Y/N, this is Melissa and Patrick." Tonya said, stopping my chair from spinning so I could focus on them but I felt dizzy.

"Hi." I said, prolonging the word.

"You seem pretty happy." Melissa said, smiling.

"Well, this is the room where kids like me get adopted, right?" I asked.

"Yes and no, Y/N. Sometimes some families realize they aren't ready to adopt or have other reasons to not go through with adoption." Tonya placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Oh." I said in a saddened tone.

"We're pretty set on adopting you though, bud." Patrick said, holding Melissa's hand.

"We've wanted a kid for a while now. So the idea of having you as our child excites us." Melissa smiled.

After going through the legalities of adopting me I would start to pack up the things that I had gathered over the past few years in a suitcase. Then I would go into the lobby as Melissa was waiting for me with Tonya.

"Ready to go home, Y/N?" Melissa asked as she squatted down to my level.

"I am!" I said excitedly.

"Well, it was nice to know you, Y/N Delany." Tonya smiled and hugged me as she used my new legal name.

"Thank you Tonya." I said, hugging her back before walking away with Melissa.

We then would walk out of the adoption center to see Patrick sitting in a gray pickup truck listening to the radio. Melissa would help me get into the back of the cab. The radio would be talking about different counties and staying out of them. The radio showed that the time was 5:43 pm.

"The CDC has made an announcement regarding an outbreak that has struck the world. If you can, make it to the refugee camps in the cities, if not stay inside of your homes and don't come out until government officials allow it." The voice through the radio would speak.

"Probably should turn that off, Pat." Melissa said, placing her hand on his hand.

"Good idea." He said, turning the radio off.

After they both talked to each other for a bit Patrick would look at me through the mirror with a smile.

"Are you ready to go home, bud?" He said, looking at the road and looking at me.

"Yeah! I can't wait to lay in my own bed!" I said in a cheerful way.

"Great. You'll have your own room for your own things." He smiled.

After a while we would catch up with traffic on the highway.

"Maybe we go back and use the back roads?" Melissa suggested.

"Sure, let's just hope it's just an accident." Patrick said as he turned around.

"What's happening?" I asked.

"We're not sure, bud. It could be anything at this point." Patrick said.

"Oh okay." I said in a soft tone.

After a few hours of driving around the city we would be an hour out of the city. It was now 7:28 pm where it started to get dark. It took us a while to get out of the city since there were an absurd amount of cars leaving the city and trying to get into the city. We stopped on the road and met a father and daughter named Todd and Aria who were also trying to leave the city. I would be sitting on the hood of the car as the adults would be talking to each other.

"So, um what school do you go to?" Aria asked, trying to start a conversation.

"Uh, I don't know what it's called." I said, kicking my feet back and forth.

"Oh, well. Um, is it nice?" She asked.

"Yeah, it sucks to sleep in a room with other kids though, but I'll get my own bed soon!" I smiled up at her.

"Oh?" She looked at Melissa and Patrick, noticing they looked different than me. "Were you adopted, Y/N?" She asked in a soft tone.

"Yeah, today!" I smiled as I continued to kick my feet.

She gave me a somber look as she felt sad for me. The adults would come over to the two of us explaining what the plan would look like moving forward.

Right as Patrick was about to start talking a squadron of planes came over and dropped bombs onto the city making it engulfed in flames. This made everyone on the street gasp in shock as they saw the army kill anyone who would be in the city or within a radius of the bombs.

"Holy shit." Patrick said, placing his hands over his head.

"They just dropped napalm in the streets..." Robb said.

"What are we supposed to do?" Melissa asked as the other people would talk amongst themselves.

"We uh, fuck man..." Robb would continue to look at the fires coming from the city.

Then Aria would take my hand and help me down off the hood to walk over to the adults.

"What just happened?" She asked, looking up at Robb and Patrick.

"I don't know, baby." Robb hugged her to calm them both down.

More military helicopters would fly into the city as car horns started to honk as people began to panic, not knowing what would come next.
