A week had passed since you had caught your first crocodile. Well, Carlos had done most of the work, but you were still proud of yourself. The only thing that made you a little gloomy was the fact, that Carlos wanted to forget about what happened between you on the trip. It had only been a short kiss, but he had decided it was for the better not to mention it again. He was probably right, considering the big age difference. Also you didn't want to jeopardise your friendship with Camila.
While you were hanging out the wet laundry, your gaze kept slipping to the man, who constantly occupied your mind. He was sharpening one of his hunting knives at this moment and you could've watched him doing that for hours. In general, you never got bored watching this man work. Whether he was standing in the fields, preparing food for the people or distributing tasks to them, it didn't matter. It fascinated you, just to watch what Carlos was capable of, considering his age. And if you were being honest, you had imagined every so often, what those skilled hands of him could do to you. Just thinking about it, made your body shiver and you had to force your gaze away from him. Finishing your task, you saw Camila approaching you, a concerned expression on her face.
"What's wrong?", you asked her, expecting something bad had happened on their patrol tonight. Did Castillo's men catch someone of your people? Or worse, were someone being killed again?
"You tell me, prima." With her arms crossed over her chest, she was expectantly looking at you.
You squatted down to pick up the laundry basket, putting it to the side so no one would trip over it. "I don't know what you're talking about. Everything's muy bueno", you reassured her, whiping some sweat off of your forehead. You gave her a smile that probably didn't reach your eyes. How could everything be fine, when the man you had fallen for was giving you the cold shoulder?
"Oh, really?", Camila questioned, definitely not convinced. "If everything's fine, how come you and papá won't talk to each other?" She casted a glance towards her father, who was still occupied with his knife. "Seems like ever since you two went to catch that cocodrillo, he's avoiding you. Papá even asked me to mend his fuckin' pants, what you're usually doing for him."
"We just...had an argument, that's all", you explained, your voice not as firm as you wanted it to be. You'd lie if you'd say that it didn't bother you. That it didn't hurt you, how distant he acted. It was painful to see him everyday, knowing he was so close but yet so far away.
"Your nostrils flare when you're lying, Y/N", Camila stated and you could hear the disappointment in her voice. Coño, she knew you too well. Despite that, her dark brown eyes were full of concern, she seemed to be really worried. But you couldn't tell her, why Carlos was avoiding you. You didn't even know how you should tell one of your best friends, that you had fallen for her father. That you had kissed him on your little hunting trip and that this kiss was kinda the reason why he kept you at bay. It wasn't your intention to lie to her, you were just scared of her reaction.
Camila let out a long sigh, then gently touched your arm. "Let's take a walk." She hooked your arm with her own, leading you out of the farm, determined to get her answers out of you when you're out of earshot and prying eyes. "You know you can talk to me, right? About everything."
"I don't think I can in this matter", you said quietly, still loud enough for her to hear it.
"Ouch", was her only reply and she let go of your arm.
"It's not like that, Mila", you promised her, reassuringly grabbing her hand, feeling the leather of her fingerless gloves. "You know I love you, but some things are better left unspoken."
Inhaling deeply, Camila replied: "You mean something like my best friend's crush on my father?"
Shocked you looked at her, your mouth agape. You didn't know how to respond to that. How did she know?
