Detective Emily Harris pulled up to the deserted alleyway in the heart of the city. The streetlights flickered as she stepped out of her car, her boots crunching on broken glass and discarded trash. The smell of cigarette smoke and cheap liquor hung heavy in the air.
At the end of the alleyway, Emily saw the faint glow of police lights reflecting off a nearby building. As she drew closer, she could make out the yellow tape and the uniformed officers milling about.
One officer stepped forward and greeted Emily with a nod. "Detective Harris, the victim's this way."
Emily followed him through the maze of alleys and abandoned buildings, her mind racing with the possibilities of what she might find.
The victim was a young woman, no older than twenty, with long blonde hair and a black cocktail dress. Her face was twisted in pain, and a trickle of blood trailed down the side of her mouth.
As Emily surveyed the scene, she noticed something strange. There were no signs of struggle, no overturned furniture or broken windows. It was almost as if the killer had snuck up on the victim and caught her off guard.
Emily's partner, Detective Ortiz, arrived and joined her in examining the crime scene. As they worked, Emily began to uncover clues that didn't quite fit together. The victim's purse was still intact, and her jewelry was still on her body. But there was a small scrap of paper in her hand, with a phone number scrawled across it in black ink.
Emily couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this case than met the eye. As she and Ortiz wrapped up the crime scene and headed back to the precinct, she couldn't help but wonder who the victim had been calling, and what secrets they might hold.
