I always dreamt of a day that the masks could go away and things would become normal again, but I didn't expect it to end like this. The city was sectioned off into segments. We were not allowed to leave our segment of the city. If we go anywhere you have to be checked for bites and for a fever or any signs of an infection.
It's been 3 weeks since I watched my twin brother get shot and killed in front of me. Knowing what a monster you become after getting the virus terrifies me. I'm scared of who is gonna get hurt next would it be my parents, my best friend, or another sibling. I wish I could have done something sooner to help my twin brother. But maybe I have time this time to fix it if my other siblings get the virus.
I was dancing around my room listening to music blaring in my headphones trying to drown out the chaos going on in the world. I feel a tap on my shoulder so I take my earbuds out and look over to see my dad looking down at me, "oh hey dad , what do you need?" I ask, his eyebrows have been burrowed and his face has been saddened ever since losing Asher and Elijah. He looked more his age this way, he lost motivation to shave his stubble beard he lost two of his eight children a year apart. How could he continue the way he had been?
He looked at me with a worried look and said to me, "you should get an emergency bag packed. I heard from Hayden that the city is starting to riot and the geeks are starting to find ways to get in, be ready to go when things get worse okay baby girl?" he explained to me. I nod in response. Hayden is my dad's partner in the police force and his childhood best friend. I wonder if he and his three kids Colton, Sawyer, and Ivy are okay. They live in section 2 while we live in section 1.
I put my phone and headphones on the bed then I grab my bookbag from the closet and empty out all of the old school supplies and set them on the closet floor. I open my dresser and pick out a few pairs of jeans and a few tee shirts then I reach into my closet and take a few hoodies and jackets off the hangers. I then grab some socks and underwear and throw them into my bag. I put all of my clothing items in the bookbag then grabbed a teddy bear from my bed and put it next to my bookbag. It was a bear my oldest brother gave to me before he died. It has his laugh in it which makes me feel closer to him even though he's not here with us anymore.
I make sure I grab an extra bag and take it to the bathroom and put together a bag of all the medical supplies my family may need. I grabbed all the medicine and bandages from the cabinet then I went into the closet and grabbed some extra supplies that will be useful. We have a lot of supplies in our house because having a house of eight children leads to many accidents.
I could hear my mom downstairs packing a bag full of food from our pantry. We have a huge kitchen because my moms a baker and chef and our pantry stays stocked up most of the time. I set the bag of medical supplies on my bag before checking on my little sister Kennedy to see if she got her bag packed okay. I smiled as my bubbly ball of joy little sister was trying to climb the wall to reach the top of her closet to grab something. "Do ya need some help with that munchkin?" I asked as she turned and nodded with chocolate brown puppy dog eyes staring at me.
I grabbed what she needed down and handed it to her before heading down the stairs to the living room. Halfway down the stairs I heard a series of gunshots going off near my house. They were so loud that I could hear them so they must have been close.
