Claudine looked at the clock and saw it was half past seven. Looking over at Charlie she asked " tell me what you want? " Charlie and her played cards every Thursday night for the past twelve years.
Charlie knew what she meant, for his birthday was in three short days from now. She always liked to give him a want and a surprise. He never liked asking for anything from his cousins however , so he never told them anything he really wanted. In fact he did the opposite, he asked them for what he didn't want and learned to like it. It was a tradition, he only knew.
Back in memory lane he pictured all the things he learned to appreciate and it was a great gift that lasted longer than most presents . Thinking hard, he looked around at Claudine's little cottage for inspiration. Charlie found it when he saw her bags of pop corn peeking out of the pantry door! Claudine was a great cook, this would be perfect. " Well since you asked, I'd love you to make me fresh cornbread?"
Claudine was surprised " I didn't know you like cornbread ! Well we will have to see if you get it now, won't we?" She patted Charlie's knee warmly. Then Claudine looked at her hand and said " Gin" for her second win of the night.
