I ran a hand through my hair as I pulled up to Adeline's door. She wasn't answering her phone. Again.

Parking the car I got out and walked up to her door. I rang the doorbell smiling at the kid playing with toy trucks in the yard next to hers.

The door opened and Adeline's mom, Katrina Kent, looked out at me. I pasted a smile on my face, as I greeted her.

"Mrs. Kent, good to see you." I said, lying through my teeth. The woman was a menace. You'd think that her daughter was an annoying dog as much attention as she paid her.

"Oh Nicholas, it's you." She smiled absently, tucking her perfectly done, dark brown hair behind her ear. "Are you here to see Adeline?"

I mentally grimaced at the stupidity of the question. "Yes. I am. Is she here?" I peered past Katrina into the house.

"Yes. she's upstairs in her room like she usually is." Katrina waved her hand towards in an upward direction. "Honestly! I can't seem to get her out of her room. It's not healthy for someone to be in alone so much!"

Yeah because she doesn't want to be hounded about everything she does, I thought keeping my smile firmly in place, but the worry that I had been pushing to the back of my mind began to grow.

"How long has she been up there, do you know?" I asked, fidgeting impatiently.

"Oh since before supper last night."

I stared at her as she blinked up at me lazily. "You mean she didn't eat last night?!" I practically growled.

Katrina took a step back, her brown eyes finally showing something more than complete disinterest. "No, she didn't."

Completely done with this shit, I pushed past her and jogged towards the stairs, leaving Katrina with an open mouth and a hand on the door handle.

I ran up the stairs and straight towards Adeline's room. Her door was closed. I knocked on the door impatiently. "Addie? it's me, Nic." I leaned my forehead against the door listening for any sound. There was none.

The worry had turned into panic. I tried the door knob and found it locked. Frantically I reached up and felt around the door frame for the extra key I knew was hidden there. I found it and with shaking hands unlocked the door. I opened it quietly and walked in, closing it behind me. The room was completely dark, shades and curtains closed.

I looked at the bed. She was there. I walked quickly toward the bed, "Ads?" I queried shakily, scared of what I would find.

She slowly raised her head and looked at me. Her dark, agony filled eyes hit me like a punch in the gut.

"Oh Ads!" I whispered, kneeling beside the bed and brushing her black hair away from her face. "Why didn't you call me?"

Her dark eyes filled with tears. "Because I don't want to be a burden to you." Her tortured voice broke me.

"Ads," I whispered, pain tearing at my heart. I pressed one of my hands to her cheek, brushing a tear her face.

"You will never be a burden to me. Never." I leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Okay?"

She nodded, more tears spilling from her soulful eyes. Her breath caught on a sob. I blinked back my own tears, as I stood and walked to the other side of the bed, toeing of my shoes, before I slid into the bed behind her.
