Jimin stood in front of the school gates, checking the time on his phone for what felt like the hundredth time. Ten minutes had passed since they’d agreed to meet. He had hoped maybe, just maybe, Jungkook would show up, but as the seconds ticked by, a sinking feeling started to settle in his stomach. Maybe Jungkook had forgotten. Or worse, maybe he had stood him up.
Jimin glanced around the empty schoolyard. The air was cool, the late afternoon sunlight casting long shadows on the pavement. He sighed, a small frown tugging at his lips. He was about to turn on his heel and head home, resigning himself to another quiet evening alone, when a voice suddenly cut through the stillness.
"Jimin!"
Jimin’s head snapped up, his heart skipping a beat as he saw Jungkook running toward him, out of breath. His hair was slightly tousled, his face flushed from the sprint. He was holding a hand to his side, but despite his apparent exhaustion, there was a wide grin on his face.
Jimin blinked, unsure whether to be relieved or annoyed. “Jungkook,” he said, his voice a little softer than he’d intended. “You’re late.”
“I’m sorry,” Jungkook panted, catching his breath. “A teacher caught me and reported me, so I got held up. I didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”
“It’s fine. I wasn’t sure if you were going to show up,” he admitted, the honesty making his voice softer than usual.
Jungkook chuckled, his eyes lighting up with that same warmth Jimin had noticed earlier. “Well, I wouldn’t leave you hanging. Now, where do you want to go?” Jungkook’s expression turned playful, as if he were eager to make up for lost time.
Jimin hesitated, unsure of where to suggest. He didn’t really have a place in mind, his thoughts still swirling from earlier. “You choose,” he said with a shrug, not really caring where they went, as long as it wasn’t just walking aimlessly around the block.
The moment the words left his mouth, Jimin saw Jungkook’s eyes light up even more, his grin growing wider. “Okay, I’ve got it! Let’s go to the beach! It’s a perfect day for it, don’t you think?”
Jimin’s heart skipped at the mention of the beach. He had always loved the ocean—the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the salty breeze, the peacefulness of it all. It was a place he could just be without thinking about everything else. He hadn’t been in a while, but the thought of going now brought a small spark of excitement.
“Beach?” Jimin echoed, a real smile tugging at his lips. “I love the beach,” he added, feeling the warmth of the thought spread through him. For the first time that day, he felt a little lighter. Jungkook’s suggestion was exactly what he needed.
"Great!" Jungkook said, his voice almost triumphant as he turned to lead the way. "Let’s grab some snacks first, and then we’ll head there."
Jimin nodded, falling into step beside him as they made their way toward a nearby convenience store. Jungkook picked out a few things, and Jimin grabbed a bottle of water and some chips, not particularly hungry but just going along with the flow.
