_"Come on my darling, push! One more effort, it's almost over!"
Screams of pain echoed loudly in the clinic room lit with white neon lights, while in a hospital bed and dressed in a white dressing gown, a young woman suffered martyrdom as she was to give birth, supported and helped by her husband as well as a team of doctors and nurses, all equipped with anti-contamination uniforms and masks. One of the orderlies was wiping the sweaty woman's forehead as her husband was ready to receive the baby that was coming. Meanwhile, behind tinted glass, in a small adjoining room plunged into semi-darkness, two people were observing the operation in progress without saying a word.
_"I see the head! One more last effort! Inhale, exhale and... push!"
The poor woman in pain, her face contorted with pain after so many hours of effort, screamed and pushed one last time as the baby came out entirely, carefully picked up by the hands of her husband who could not suppress a proud smile behind his protective mask as the baby's first cries began to be heard. The doctors seemed relieved at the success of the delivery and moved aside, letting the doctor come to his wife who was breathing with difficulty and came to show her her child who had just been born.
_"She's a girl...a beautiful little girl." said the father proudly.
_"She...she's beautiful." breathed the mother with exhaustion, but a tear of joy flowing from her eye.
_"You have succeeded, my love." said the doctor, coming to kiss his wife. "What name do you want to give her?"
_"I already thought about it... Emily... her name will be Emily Shepard." said the woman, who strangely could barely keep her eyes open and her voice getting weaker and weaker. "Take care of her, Gleen. Most importantly... make sure that she doesn't become like...me..."
Dr. Gleen Shepard lost his smile and was bewildered, even very worried, when he saw his wife who seemed to lose consciousness as the cardiogram plummeted, indicating total heart failure.
_"Honey? Honey, can you hear me?! Hey, open your eyes! No... NO! NO!"
Under the cries of the baby, Gleen Shepard began to panic and had to be backed up and led out of the room with the child by two of the doctors who assisted him, while the others were harnessed with a defibrillator to try to resuscitate the woman who had just had a cardiac attack following the excessive effort of the difficult childbirth that she had suffered for endless hours.
Several minutes passed during which the doctors worked hard, sending several powerful electric shocks into the woman's body, but in vain, the result was final and they gave up. Behind the tinted glass, the two figures had watched everything but showed no emotion. A door opened and one of the doctors came to see them and stood humbly.
_"I... I'm sorry, sir. Subject V-01 didn't survive."
_"Never mind." replied the hooded man coldly, without looking back. "The child is alive, that's all that matters. Prepare her for the program with the other kids."
_"Yes, sir... And... what about Dr. Gleen?" asked the doctor before leaving.
_"His skills are still useful to our cause in the development of new samples." said the mysterious man. "Keep an eye on him, and if he becomes an annoyance... You know what to do."
_"As you wish, sir." humbly replied the doctor, who then left the room and closed the door while in the room of the clinic, a stretcher was brought in to take the woman's body to the morgue and a nurse noted the time of death and circumstances on a digital tablet.
