December- Ella is in College.

"What are you going to do when you get home?" Kyle helped me pack my bags. Winter break was only 2 days away and I was getting ready to head back to Denver for the holidays.

The New York night was loud and full of cars honking. Everyone was busy.

I made it into NYU last May. When summer came around again, I met Kyle in one of my classes; he had an apartment with a 3rd room open. His cousin also lived with him, but his cousin traveled a lot and he needed help with the rent. That's when he invited me to live with him and so, we became roommates.

No worries, Kyle's not interested in me.

"Nahh, I may just eat once I get there! My dad makes a mean coconut pie! Yum!" I laughed.

"Girl, you better save some for me!" He walked out of my room and into the kitchen. I followed.

"Where will you be going?" I asked as I sat down in one of the living room chairs.

"My aunt Erma's." He shivered. "Her house smells like pure cat!" Kyle hated cats.

"That should be fun!!"

"Yeah . . . Hot chocolate?" I nodded and he went on making it.

--

Christmas Eve.

I hopped off the taxi and paid the driver. He smiled and said 'Happy Holidays!' I copied back and he drove off.

The fresh air skimmed past my face and beamed hard at the branches of the tree above me. I followed the direction they blew in, making my eyes shift at a certain house.

His house.

I shook my head trying not to remember 'him'. Kyle knew about it and made sure to never talk about anything related to it. I didn't like seeing anything related to it.

I grabbed my bags and walked up the front porch. The snow fell lightly onto my hair. I smiled and rang the door bell, remembering once that it had been broken.

My smile faded quickly.

But the door flew open; "Ella!!" a little girl about 10 opened the door. She hugged me tight, till world's end. Her hugs could make my crashing world fix up in a heartbeat.

"Lyla! I missed you!" I said as I hugged back.

"I missed you too, El, El!" We stayed like this for a while until we felt the snow fall harder. "Get in!!' she squealed as she pulled me inside. I left my bags by the front door and closed it swiftly.

My family came up to me and hugged and kissed me. After all the greetings, my dad turned up the Christmas music and gathered the whole family to the dinning room.

We ate and laughed. My sister told me stories about her and her boyfriend, I told her about my roommate, Kyle and my new city friends.

When the family was done eating, the party really began. Music was turned up even higher and everyone was dancing in the living room, even my dad.

But Lyla and I -being so clever, we skipped the party and decided to head upstairs. We had to make it quick, not leaving any tracks for the other kids to think that they were welcomed upstairs. So, we ran. Quietly.

I wanted to check out my old room, to see what my dad had done to it.

We made it up there and let all our laughs out. I placed my hand on the handle and turned. The door opened slowly.

There was my untouched room. Facing right back at me. Everything was exactly the same way I left it when I left for college.

I looked at Lyla and she smiled. I made a motion for her to go in first and she ran with no hesitation.

"Miss it?" She laughed as she sat on my bed.

I nodded with a big pathetic smile on my face. I walked over to my radio and sat down in the chair in front of it. So many songs, so many dance moves. Right from here.

My smile became bigger.

"I know I saw a girl brought to life, she was warm she came around like she was dignified. She showed me what it was to cry. . ."

My smiled faded. My radio wasn't on, but I heard a voice so sweet and so clear. I turned to see Lyla looking dead straight at me. She looked down.

My heart raced fast as I made my eyes shift towards the window. It was opened, allowing the sweet voice to welcome itself in.

Oh my god.
