We stand in front of the desk for what feels like an eternity. My hand is becoming sweaty in Bonnie's and Bonnie's in mine. We can hear the faint sounds of children laughing, screaming, crying, just being children. A strange sense of nostalgia gently surpassing me as I remember the sounds of my brother and sister and I playing outside at cousins' birthday parties. A smile creeping onto my face. Happy times when I didn't have a care in the world except which toys I was going to play with and whether we were going to play hide and seek or tag next.
I wish I could go back to being 4 years old again."Can I help you?" I'm dragged out of my thoughts by the very plain looking woman standing on the other side of the desk.
Bonnie shoots me a questioning look, but I just squeeze her hand in reply."U-Umm. Yeah. At least I hope so" I stutter, becoming more and more nervous and thinking over my idea a little more critically.
"We've come to look for a child" Bonnie says more confidently than I ever could. I smile at her to say thanks and make a mental note to thank her properly later.
"Well, I believe you've come to the right place" the woman said with a slight giggle at the end, making me smile and calming me down a small amount. "Just sign into our book and I'll take you to one of our meeting rooms" the woman said passing over the visitor's book and a pen.
Once Bonnie and I have signed in we head over to the door which the woman has opened for us from the inside. She guides us along a dimly lit corridor, our heels clicking against the hard wood floor.
She abruptly stops at a door, unlocking it and switching on the lights. They buzz and flicker before lighting up the whole room, allowing us to see two chairs facing a table and another chair on the other side, reminding me of the Principal's office in high school. Not that I got sent there very often. The filing cabinets in the corner and old computer system and printer didn't do the room any favours. Neither did the dull green walls and the dark blue carpet. That and the fact the windows were murky and the blinds didn't function properly.
I managed to take in a lot of the appearance of the room just by crossing the threshold.
"Please take a seat. I'm Jane" The woman said gesturing to the two seats and holding her hand out for us to shake.
"I'm Katy. And this is Bonnie" I introduce us as Bonnie sits there and smiles.
