The Gilberts. One of the most respected families, founding council's descendants, a prestige. This family was the perfect one. In the whole of Mystic Falls. Just not to Jade.

What was left of it, anyway. Her parents died in the car crash a couple months ago, and now it was just her, Elena; her twin sister and Jeremy; their little brother. They're her responsibility, whether she's ready or not.

Even though her relationship with her sister is practically non-existent-strained beyond repair-Jade always looks past that. All she cares about now is making life better for them, no matter what it takes.

The cracks in her reputation needed cushioning. She was founding family after all. It was the beginning of a new era and she was ready for it.

Depression, anxiety, dissociation were some things she had gone through and she had still not recovered. Recovery seemed out of the question when all she wanted to do was drop dead and get everyone free once and from all.

The gift of the last breath.

She was a burden to her family. Jeremy was young, he didn't understand, but she thought, when he would, he would react just like everyone else because she was the problem. And her friends... Her bad decisions led all of them to turn their backs on her or rather it was her who turned her back on them and thought she was better off.

But that was before junior year. When new people get to town, things change. Little does she know that they are vampires.

Being human in a supernatural world is hard. You have to fight for your life. You have to kill. You have to lose people. You have to be okay through it all. You have to keep your walls up. You have to always have the upper hand. You need to be stronger than them. Smarter.

And the word 'have' itself means making decisions you don't want to make.

Will she ever be happy? Will her friends come back to her? Will they ever manage to forgive her? Will she forgive herself? Would she ever be enough? Or were her parents right to think her dead?
