Chapter Six: ❝ Why are these fries so curly and complicated? ❞
THIS WAS NOT HOW I imagined my first time hanging out with a Top Drawer to go: sitting in the passenger seat of her overpriced car, with a bag of greasy fries in my lap, awkwardly contorting myself into a twisted, crouched position, hoping to avoid being seen by Jason or anyone passing by, but ending up with my left leg sticking out the window, a ketchup-stained fry dangling from my mouth, and a terrible, terrible hiccup.
"Hey-y-y, don't mind this. She's just having trouble unbuckling her seatbelt." Nora who already got out of the car said to Jason as he approached us.
I'd do anything, literally anything, to disappear right now.
Jason kept coming closer to the car until he finally stopped at the passenger window and looked at me. A look of pure absurdity formed on my face and I tried to come up with a plan to salvage the situation but all I could say was,
"It's not what it looks like," the ketchup-dipped fries struggling to completely fit into my mouth.
Damn, why are these fries so curly and complicated?
In an attempt to save face, I attempted an awkward smile, which only resulted in a hiccup that made the fry fall out of my mouth and onto my lap, leaving a ketchup stain on my jeans. Smooth, real smooth.
After a moment of intense silence and staring, Jason finally said something, "Hey Scar, are you okay, you-"
"Don't worry about her, she's fine!" Nora interrupted. "I-I'm thirsty, can I get a cup of water?"
Jason's face was laced with concern but it was hard to not pay attention when a glitter girl like Nora was talking. He glanced at me quickly before turning to Nora.
"Yes, sure, come on in." He said, gesturing towards his house.
Nora immediately grabbed his hand and leaned on his shoulder as both of them walked into Jason's house.
So that was what this was about? Just a malicious plan that involved gaslighting me into embarrassing myself in front of Jason, while Nora swooped in and played the damsel in distress to steal the spotlight.
As I sat in the car seat, feeling increasingly ridiculous and abandoned, my embarrassment turned to annoyance and then to sheer disbelief.
Nora and Jason were walking away, completely engrossed in their conversation, seemingly oblivious to the fact that I was still stuck in the car seat, with a never-ending hiccup and curly fries that seemed to have a mind of their own.
I tried to discreetly unbuckle my seatbelt, but my hiccups were getting louder and the fries were scattering everywhere. I looked around, hoping for some help or a way to escape this very uncomfortable situation, but there was no one in sight.
With a groan of frustration, I attempted to reach for the door handle, but my left leg was still sticking out of the window, it seemed like my shoe lace had gotten caught in the window mechanism. I tugged at it, wincing as the lace seemed to tighten its grip, trapping me further.
This day could not get any worse.
Nora and Jason finally disappeared from view. How could they just walk away, leaving me behind, without even helping me get out of the car? I couldn't believe my luck, or lack thereof.
My hiccups seemed to intensify, and I finally managed to unbuckle my seatbelt, freeing myself from the confines of the car seat.
I stumbled out of the car, fries falling off me like confetti, and tried to regain some semblance of composure. Nora's giggles and Jason's laughter coming from inside got louder and louder. Urgh, what a bitch.
Thankfully, my house was just across the road and the most reasonable thing to do at that point, as it seemed, was just to head home.
The last thing I wanted to do was to show up at my house looking like I just lost a food fight to a group of kindergarten kids. Even my dad wouldn't let me hear the end of it, talk less of Lucy. So I tried to clean up as much as I could before entering the house.
While wiping off the ketchup and fries off my clothes, I may have forgotten that I was still standing in the middle of the road and that I didn't have nine lives.
As usual, fate was not on my side today as a car came barreling down the road. Before I could even react, I heard a distinct "scrreeeeech" sound, followed by a jarring impact from behind that sent me sprawling to the pavement.
The driver had been on full speed, but had managed to press the brake at the last second before hitting me. Although the impact wasn't as big a deal as it could have been, the force was still enough to knock the wind out of me.
First, I let out a shaky sigh of relief, more like a groan, that I wasn't dead but I couldn't breathe or move.
I was dazed and groggy, trying to gather my senses as I stared up at the sky, still processing what had just happened.
Next, through my lashes, I saw a familiar face peering down at me. I quickly recognized he was the guy from History class who always borrowed a pen from me.
And for some reason, he was looking more attractive than I ever noticed. Or maybe the bump was just messing with my head.
