Wayne - Age 10
I heard the door click and looked at my bedside clock. it was 7 o'clock in the morning. no one should be coming into the house this early, Mum and dad are still in bed. I hope mum hasn't left me alone with dad again, even if it is just to grab a few things from the shop. I go to check the house with my baseball bat at the ready in case whoever shut the door was an intruder. Carefully, I open the my bedroom door so it didn't make a sound to spook the intruder. I round the door and tiptoe down the hallway to the living room. quickly, I turn into the small room with the baseball bat at the ready to strike any criminal on the head. I drop my weapon as i see my father, drinking again, in his favourite old chair. "Were you gonna hit me son?", slurs Dad, "Kinda girly to have a bat instead of a knife"
"Why were you out Dad?". I can smell the stench of drugs all over him, but at least it gets him off the topic of how 'girly' I am.
"Don't tell your mother" is all he says before going into a coma. He knows Mum will figure out whatever he had been to last night. I sometimes wish she'd leave him. she's afraid to I guess, she always needs to be taught a lesson. I don't know why though. I'm ten so I get lessons all the time, but Mum's finished school.
I walk back down the hallway into Mum and Dad's room where Mum is curled up in a ball with the blankets tossed back on Dad's side. I'm still a bit sleepy so i hop up onto the old mattress and pull the covers up, trying not to wake Mum. She looks peaceful for now.
