The Marking Ceremony has officially begun.

As the most significant event in our community, it unfolds under the full moon. On this night, packs from all over the state gather to honor the bonds that not only unite mates but also strengthen the ties within and across packs.

This sacred event marks a rite of passage, where wolves either choose or claim a mate for life, forging a bond sealed by the ritual of marking.

Preparation for the ceremony varies. For most, the choice of a mate is made well in advance, often involving a period of courtship where potential mates get to know each other's strengths, vulnerabilities, and spirits. This preparation can be meticulous, with both wolves and their families engaging in discussions, negotiations, and mutual agreements, ensuring that the union strengthens both individuals and their pack.

However, the ceremony also allows for more unbidden connections. On the night itself, a wolf who has not pre-selected a mate may feel a profound connection with another and decide to claim them during the ceremony. Though increasingly rare in recent generations, such markings, driven by raw, instinctual recognition rather than premeditated choice, are seen as the purest expression of wolves' natural instincts.

The actual marking itself is a ritual that involves one wolf baring their neck to their chosen mate, who then marks them with a bite that leaves a permanent scar.

Once marked, the couple is considered bonded for life, their relationship sanctioned and celebrated by the pack.

Tonight, like every wolf here, I watch with excitement and apprehension. I know what is at stake. While I've longed for my own moment, the rogue skin-walker from my dreams appearing in the woods cast a shadow over my anticipation.

Nevertheless, the Marking Ceremony begins undeterred.

Grace Minthe of Nightshade is the first to step forward to be marked. She looks stunning in her dark indigo dress, and her eyes are filled with excitement and nervousness as the Gamma from the Crimson Dawn pack steps forward to mark her. The bite is quick and sure, and I can see the bond between them taking hold as they gaze into each other's eyes.

Watching the newly marked pairs move off to the side, I feel a pang of envy. I've always been curious about the mate bond, wondering what it must feel like to be so connected to someone that it's as if you share the same soul.

I'll likely never experience this myself. Even tonight, my interactions have been few and fraught; the only men I've encountered included a suitor from Evergreen interested in Aurora, and Alexander, whom I infuriated to the point of him shifting and nearly devouring me. More than these awkward or dangerous interactions, a deeper disappointment haunts me—I am unable to summon my wolf form like the others. This failure isolates me within my pack, a constant source of shame that gnaws at me. I try to shove these disheartening thoughts aside as I watch my packmates, their faces alight with joy as they revel in the profound connections of their newly formed bonds.

However, fear still grips me. What if I never find my mate? What if I'm destined to be alone forever? The questions torment me. As more and more wolves are marked, the tension in the air grows thicker, and the drums pound on, relentless and hypnotic.

The scent of blood, sharp and metallic, mixes with the delicate fragrance of wildflowers, creating a reminder of the night's dual nature. My body tenses, coiled like a spring, ready to snap.

Suddenly, a comforting hand rests on my shoulder, and I turn to find my mother standing there. Her hair, the deep shade of a ripe grape, cascades around her shoulders, framing a face that, even concerned, radiates a nurturing beauty reminiscent of the earth itself. Her eyes, the same blue as mine, hold a depth of kindness that has always been my solace. For a moment, I am transported back to my childhood, to times when her gentle touch could soothe any fear or pain.

"Serenity, my child," she says, her voice like honey. "What happened to you?"

I swallow hard, not wanting to burden her with my troubles. But something in her expression tells me that she already knows.

"I ran into Alexander Blythe," I manage to say, my voice a strained whisper. "He tried to attack me, but a rogue wolf intervened and saved me."

Her eyes narrow, and her lips press together in a thin line. "Alexander Blythe has always been trouble," she murmurs, her tone laced with disdain. "But you're safe now, and that's what matters." She reaches out, her touch gentle yet firm, pulling me into a comforting embrace that seems to absorb some of my tension.

As we stand there, her strength seeping into me, I realize how much I rely on her grounded presence. "Thank you, Mom," I whisper against her shoulder, grateful not only for her support but also for her understanding. She doesn't press for more details, knowing I'll share when ready. Instead, she holds me a moment longer, then steps back, her gaze assessing me once more.

"Serenity," she begins, the name lingering like a melody. "I know that things have been difficult for you lately. But remember, I am always here for you. You possess a strength that will see you through these times."

Her words are like a balm to my soul, and I feel a sense of calm wash over me. I look over at my sisters, and they nod at me in agreement.

"We're here for you, Serene," Aurora says, her voice firm. "Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

Just as I'm about to express my gratitude, an eerie hush blankets the clearing.

From the shadowed edge of the woods, Alexander emerges.

His appearance sends a chill through the air—fresh scratches and wounds crisscross his face, a stark trickle of blood running down his cheek. Despite the rogue wolf's intervention, I know that I am no match for the Gamma of the Ghostwalkers, the most powerful pack ever known, even with his human form battered and bloodied.

The size of the scratch on his face captures my attention—it's deep, vicious, a scar in the making. Fear grips me as I try to anticipate his intentions. Will he seek revenge against me? Or worse, against my family, my sisters?

But to my surprise, he kneels down before me, his head bowed in a gesture so vulnerable it borders on the unbelievable. The clearing is utterly silent, every wolf's gaze fixed on this unprecedented display.

My heart races, pounding against my ribs as though trying to escape.

"Serenity Stark of Silvermoon," he begins, his voice hoarse with pain, "I come to you not as a Gamma, but as a man. I have wronged you, and I beg for your forgiveness."

I can't believe what I'm hearing.

His words hang in the air, bewildering and completely out of character. Confusion swirls within me. Why would he, a powerful Gamma, lower himself so?

Before I can even begin to untangle my thoughts or muster a response, Reid strides forward. His voice cuts through the thickening tension like a shard of ice. "Get up, Alexander," he commands with a dismissive sneer, his words dripping with contempt. "Serene is a mutt. She's not worthy of your forgiveness."

A surge of anger wells up inside me at Reid's words, but before I can retort, an eerie silence descends upon the clearing. I glance around, puzzled, and catch Alexander's expression—his eyes wide, a look of unmistakable fear etched across his face.

My heart hammers in my chest as I slowly turn to follow his gaze. Emerging from the dense shadows, a figure steps into the moonlight. The air seems to still around him, as if even the night itself pauses in awe.

It's Everest Blythe.

A/N: I want to take a moment to thank you for reading this chapter. It means the world to me that you are enjoying this story and following along with Serenity's journey. As we move forward, I'm curious to know: Do you think Alexander's apology was genuine, or does he have ulterior motives? And what about Reid's attitude towards Serene? How do you feel about it? And finally, what are your thoughts on the sudden appearance of Everest Blythe? Anyway, thank you again for reading. I can't wait to share more with you soon!
