Y/n's eyes slowly open, the sun filtering into them. He squints as the sun's rays hit his eyes. He does what he can to block the sun from his eyes with his right hand. He can feel a weight on his arm and looks over to see what is causing it. There, he sees Sarah resting her head against his arm. Her smaller hands gripped his larger one. Her face was toward him, her eyes closed and partially covered by her hair. Y/n gently takes his hand and tucks her hair behind her ear and out of her face. Once he's done that, he gives a light smile.

He tries to recall how he got here. The last thing he remembers was getting to Sarah last night. Pain filters through his system and causes him to grunt. That's when the events of the previous night replay in his head. It all comes back; Getting attacked, finding out Sarah had been bitten and was a vampire, defending his friends at Ethan's house, crashing the party, and the subsequent fight with Jesse.

He looks at Sarah's face as he recalls it all. He didn't get Erica out. He had promised and didn't follow through. He hadn't only let himself down but Sarah as well. He looks to the bedstand and sees Excalibur leaning up against it. He'd let them down.

Sarah shifts a little, starting to stir from her slumber. Y/n brushes a few loose hairs out of her face with his fingers and tries to lean up. Sarah opens her eyes and adjusts to the light. She lifts her head and lets her vision come into focus. She can see Y/n looking at her with a hand still gently moving some of her hair. She believes herself to be dreaming and blinks a few times. It takes her a moment to recognize that she is awake, and Y/n is gently tucking back her hair. When she realizes this, she shoots up and looks Y/n in the eyes.

"Y/n!" She exclaims.

Y/n tries to sit up, and Sarah quickly moves to help him. Y/n puts his back on the headboard of his bed. He is trying to be as comfortable as he can be, given there was a sizable wound in his lower stomach. Sarah looks into Y/n's eyes as she sits back in the chair. There is silence between the two briefly before Sarah speaks up.

"Do you need anything?" She asks softly.

"Water would be nice," Y/n half-jokes with a parched voice.

Sarah looks around and sees that there is a jug of water that Y/n would usually carry around during the summer. She picks it up and feels the water slosh around inside it.

"Would you like me to get some ice in it?" Sarah looks at him, still in shock that he was awake.

"No, not right now." Y/n shakes his head lightly, "Water is water. I'm thirsty."

Sarah nods and gently hands the jug to Y/n. He takes the jug and twists the nozzle open and takes a drink from it. The action caused a little pain in his shoulder, but the water did help his dry throat. He sets it down on his lap and breathes a sigh of relief. One need had been met. There were others but they could wait. Y/n looks at Sarah, studying her face for a moment. She looked shocked, and a little worried, but still, there was some relief in her eyes. He brings up a half smile before looking down at his lap.

"I didn't save her, Sarah," Y/n says in a low voice.

Sarah looks at him while lightly biting her lip. She puts a hand on his and lightly wraps hers around it, "You did what you could, Y/n."

"What I could apparently wasn't enough," Y/n mutters. "I fought him. I fought Jesse. I thought I had the power to keep pushing and distract them long enough for Carter and Matt to escape and get at least Erica out of there but I couldn't."

Sarah sighs and stands up a bit. She keeps one hand with his and uses the other to lift his chin so he is looking at her.

"I'm sure you did everything you could to save Erica," She says softly. "You went back in. You tried. Matt and Carter managed to get out. And I'm sure Jesse wasn't an easy fight. Not to mention you had already been fighting so many before you went back. You were probably exhausted. You did all that you could last night to make sure we all got out of there and more. You did your best with what you had."
