"Hey, man."

Adrian slammed his locker shut and turned around, facing the source of the voice. His friend, Hecate, stood behind him, grinning. "Today's the day."

Adrian raised his brow in surprise. "You're gonna tell her?"

Hecate nodded excitedly. "I'm just gonna get it outta the way!"

"That's amazing, dude!" Adrian high-fived his friend. "Need a wingman?"

"Yes," Hecate said. "I have no idea what I'm gonna say."

"I- you what?"

Hecate teetered on his heels. "What?"

"You don't know what you're gonna say to her..." Adrian said, confused. "But you do know that you're gonna confess...?"

Hecate considered this. "Mhm!" he cried after a minute, nodding. His dark hair flopped up-and-down, in sync with his head's motion.

"Hec..." sighed Adrian, rubbing his temples. "I- I don't know how to help you."

"Adrian, please!" he begged. "I really, really need to tell her! I've never done this before, okay?" He sighed. "Besides, you're her best friend. You know the best things for me to say to her!"

Adrian huffed. "You got me there..." he grumbled.

"So, will you help me?"

"I don't have a choice, do I?"

"I mean..."

"Fine," he sighed. "I'll help." Hecate cheered and threw his arms around Adrian in a hug. "Alright, tell you what; class is starting soon, so I'll text you some stuff to say and you can practice at lunch. But do NOT tell her until after school, okay? You'll just fuck it up if you say anything before then."

"Got it!" cried Hecate, nodding determinedly. "Thank you!" He whirled and hurried down the hall to his first period.

"That dumbass..." Adrian murmured with a shake of his head.

He started down the hall in the other direction, then checked the clock on the wall again. TWO MINUTES?! He picked up the pace and was soon sprinting full-speed down the hall.

He skidded to a stop outside of his first period and burst into the room, breathing heavily. He paused in the doorway as he noticed that his seat was occupied by an unfamiliar brunet boy who was talking to a blonde girl — Adrian's best friend, Claire — in the seat beside him.

Adrian groaned and stalked over to his desk.

"...Away, Garrett," the girl was saying. "Leave me alone."

Wait, that's Garrett? Adrian sped up and slammed his notebook onto the desk, snatching their attention.

"Fuck off," he hissed at the brunet.

Garrett whirled around and glared indignantly at the boy. He huffed and snapped, "Mind your business."

Adrian glared. "You're in my seat, dumbass."

Garrett groaned and growled "Just go wait somewhere else until we're done talking."

The warning bell rang overhead and Garrett glanced up, then huffed and slid out of the seat. He stood up and stomped out the door.

"Are you alright?" asked Adrian in a low voice. He set his things down on his desk and plopped into his seat.

Claire nodded. "He keeps trying to convince me to get back with him," she murmured. Claire leaned back in her chair and watched the ceiling. "He's so desperate," she said. "He's too far buried in his own ego to see what he did."
