The doctor left so he could get every thing ready to X-ray and stitch up Kaelyn.
"That's probably why I've had trouble breathing." Kaelyn sighed. "He did kick me." She started sobbing and laid on her side crying. I got up an sat next to her.
"Kaelyn, I'm here for you. I'll stay here as long as it takes." I brushed through her long brown hair.
"Why?! You don't even know me." She sobbed louder.
"Kaelyn, I'd help anyone in your situation. You don't deserve this." I sighed. "Anyway, where are you staying? I mean, didn't Jasper kick you out?" I questioned her.
"I uh- don't have anywhere to go. My parents won't talk to me because I wouldn't break up with Jasper, and my sister lives in Canada now. I'm kinda homeless." She balled up, putting her knees up to her chin.
"Don't worry. When we get out of this hospital, you can live with me." After saying that, I realized how far I was going with some strange girl from a bar. Well, people sometimes have roommates they barley know. Maybe I could too.
"R-Really? Thank you! I promise to listen to you and obey your rules." She said sitting up to make eye contact.
"I don't have any rules. You can do whatever. I'll set you up in one of my spare bedrooms. It has a bathroom and everything. Do you have anything you need to get from your old place?" I knew even if she did, it'd be a battle to get it. I'm sure, knowing how abusive Jasper is, he'd put up a fight.
"I can't thank you enough. I'll help pay any bills you want. I do have some things but... Maybe we should wait." I nodded just as the doctor came back in. He came with a nurse and a cart full of things for stitches.
"Sorry, are we interrupting?" The nurse hesitantly asked.
"No, it's okay, we were just talking." Kaelyn said as I went back to sit down at the chair by the bed.
"I was wondering, can I get some pain killers so I won't feel this as much? I kinda freak out when things like this happen." Kaelyn said, sitting up on her hospital cot.
"Don't worry, we already brought some just in case. It's a few pills. I have water for you too." The nurse handed Kaelyn the pills and bottle of water. She quickly took them and laid back on the cot. The doctor put wound cleaner on a small wipe and rubbed it over the area. She flinched but calmed down after the pills kicked in. The doctor took out the needle and thread. He put stitches all under her eye.
"31 stitches. It should heal in about 2-3 weeks, then you may remove them." He put the things he used, and his gloves, back on the cart. The nurse took the cart away but the doctor stayed. "Miss. Kaelyn, come with me. We're going to get you into a hospital gown and do some X-rays. Your girlfriend can come with if you'd like." I stood up to come with them and Kaelyn stood up also.
"We're roommates, not girlfriends." I nodded to agree with Kaelyn.
"I'm sorry my mistake." We continued down the long hospital hallway until we reached a dark room full of machines. "This is the X-ray room. Here's your gown. Please go change, and she can take your clothes bak to your room." He was obviously talking about me. I followed Kaelyn to the nearest ladies room, where she changed. She exited the stall with the gown on a handed me a pile of clothes.
"It's really cold." She shivered. Kaelyn did have a hoodie but she couldn't wear it because she had to get X-rays.
"I know, wish I had brought a hoodie." I said. I had only wore t-shirt and jeans.
"You can put on mine." Kaelyn said smiling her amazing smile.
"Really? Thanks." I rushed off to the Kaelyn's room in the hospital. I knew we would probably be here awhile. I folded her shirt and jeans in a pile on her bed, but slipped on her pink hoodie. 'It smells like her, that strawberry perfume that I've smelled on her every since we met at the bar.' I hugged myself in her sweatshirt, breathing that sweet scent. I walked back to the X-ray room, Kaelyn was just closing the door. I sat outside on the floor next to the door. I waited about 20 minutes when Kaelyn came out. I quickly stood up and helped her to her room. I helped her in her bed, now I could tell she was having trouble breathing. She was breathless from the short walk down the hallway. Once in the room, I helped her lay down and she quickly fell asleep. I turned on the small tv to the news, but fell asleep also. It was about 1:04 when the doctor came in with the X-rays. I woke up instantly when I heard the heavy door close and the lights flicker on. The doctor was setting up the X-rays to show us. Kaelyn was still asleep so I got up and woke her up. She was obviously was very tired but wanted to see the results enough to stay awake.
"Okay Miss. Kaelyn, I was right. You've punctured your lung. We will have to perform surgery to set your rib back in place and patch the hole. You'll have surgery on Monday. Sorry it couldn't be sooner but I didn't have any open appointment times. It would probably be better if you stay here. I have this form for your insurance so you're not charged." He handed Kaelyn a clipboard of paper. "As for the X-rays," He pointed to the X-rays on the light board they were displayed on. "You're second rib on the right is broken, and the impact of it breaking punctured your right lung. We just need to close up the hole and set your rib. I've done it before and I can do it again." He took down the X-rays and slipped them back in the yellow folder they were in. "Here, these you can keep." He handed me the folder and I set it in the chair next to mine. After the doctor left, I decided to tidy up because the neat pile of Kaelyn's clothes that were on the bed were now on the floor. I folded them back up and put them with the folder. As soon as I was about to fall back asleep, I heard a small knock on the door.
"Come in." I quietly said, trying not to rewake Kaelyn. A nurse entered the room, standing in the entrance.
"Would you like a cot to sleep on? I can bring one in." I nodded and she left to return moments later with a bed on wheels.
"I'll let you set it up." She left for the night. I rolled the bed next to Kaelyn's and turned off the light. The only light now illuminating the room was the small tv on the wall. I fell asleep for the night. All I could think was 'I'm going to be here for Kaelyn for three days...'
