"Val? Val!" I jolt awake, looking around confused. I look at Sae's hand on my shoulder that stopped shaking me after I was awake."We're here" is all he said as he stepped out the car, grabbing something from the back seat. I look forward and see the hospital in front of me. I quickly unbuckle myself and step out, cold air hitting my face immediately. I grab my bag and shut the door.
We walk inside and I go check in while Sae waits for me. I get the room number and two visitor badges, one for me and one for Sae
Room 325. We have to take an elevator to get to the third floor where the room is located. We walk down the hall in awkward silence, the elevator waiting at the end for us.
We make it and step inside, I press the button to take us to the third floor.
I hear Sae open his mouth, only to keep it closed again.
He takes a breathe before speaking. "Val i'm sorry" he stutters out. "I should've taken you with me" he continues.
"Don't even worry about it." I quickly say dryly, biting my tongue to hold back. I keep my eyes forward, i'm annoyed really. Why apologize now?
He only looks at me and sighs.
The elevator stops and opens the doors, signaling for us to step out on the 3rd floor. As were walking our hands accidentally touch, when i felt his hand i immediately snatched mines away and shoved them in my pocket, earning another sigh from him.
We make it to room 325 and i hesitate before knocking.
"Coming!" I hear a voice say. My heart is pounding and i start shaking out of nervousness. I hear some noise behind the door until it opens.
My mom was there facing me. Her eye bags clear and the tiredness in her face was transparent.
"hey mom" i say with a tired smile. "Valkarie!" she squeals before pulling me into a tight embrace. It felt so nice to hug my mom after years. She always had a nice scent that always comforted me. She felt so warm, i couldn't help but melt into the hug.
She finally pulls away and looks up at Sae. "Itoshi Sae! It's been so long! Have you been treating my daughter right?" she asks with a giggle. "Any grandchildren yet?" she joked again.
I clear my throat, looking away in awkwardness. "Uh mom.. me and Sae aren't together anymore" I say flatly. "Oh my.. i'm so sorry-" she quickly apologizes before she's cut off. "Don't worry about it" Sae says with a gentle smile.
Sae holds up the bag he had taken out the car, which i never paid attention to. He hands it to my mom. "I wanted to get a gift for you since times are hard right now" he says.
My mom looks into the bag and her eyes fill with tears as she rushes to hug Sae. I stood there awkwardly with my arms crossed. My mom hands me the bag and ushers us to sit down and make ourselves comfortable.
I decide to look inside the bag and see food, drinks, clothes and blankets. I scoff and roll my eyes and tie the bag.
Sae takes notice of this and frowns. We make eye contact for a second and I quickly look away annoyed.
My mom takes two chairs and placed them next to each other while placing hers in front of us. "Your brother has been doing better, he was awake for a couple minutes a little bit ago." I sigh with relief as I look behind mom and see my brother laying there in the hospital bed.
My heart shattered seeing the bruises and and cuts on him. If I didn't control myself i would've broke out sobbing there.
"If you don't mind me asking, why did you two break up? You two were inseparable" my mom asked. My hands tightened up at her question I took and deep breathe and I turned to Sae, who's expression was blank. He sighed.
