You have a dream two nights later, after your first shift, and its teeth and claws and blood and fire.
You woke up panting from it, sweat drenching your chest at how you could still smell the forest from your lingering dream. How you could still taste blood, iron, and how your teeth hurt with a dull ache.
When you made it to the shower, there was dirt under your nails, palms caked in earth. The hot water beat down your back, and a confused little noise forms at the back of your throat as you noticed them. You scrubbed it away, thinking maybe you forgot that you and Marilyn planted something the other day. Too occupied with how she kissed you, the memory must have faded from your mind.
As you washed, the dirt reveals rings around your wrists, skin a light pink with markings. That made you frown, worrying your bottom lip. The action had you hissing, as a drying scab reopened. You recoil and touched the fragile skin of your mouth, and when you pulled back your fingers, there was blood.
You flush; because you think of her lips and teeth on you, her tongue inside your mouth.
And the earth and the scars don't matter anymore.
The memory has you dissociating lightly at the lunch table, the only thing you can feel is the warm sun on your skin and the cool Autumn breeze. You're only bought out of your warm thoughts when Enid's excited smile and voice jars you.
Blinking back to reality, you look up as Enid speaks, directing her words to the rest of the table. It's then you realise Wednesday, Yoko and Bianca must have joined you and Enid at some point, and you feel embarrassed at not even realising it until now.
"Who else has gotten their Rave'n outfits?" The blonde asks eagerly, bouncing in her seat so excitedly she's jostling Wednesday next to her. Her girlfriend simply narrows her eyes, an annoyed breath leaving her nose.
You rest your chin in your hand, but quickly flash your eyes back and forth between everyone as they're all expecting an answer from you.
"What?" You say self-consciously, smiling shyly at their looks. It's Enid who's the most forward though, making you blush and drop your hand when she leans across the table to ask.
"Well," She says, dragging out the word with a grin. "It's your first official dance at Nevermore!" The blonde says, grinning. "Do you have an outfit picked out? A date? Anyone on your mind? Oh! You should definitely ask-"
Yoko snorts, looking to Enid over her glasses with a raised eyebrow, gently interrupting her friend. "Enid, girl, you seriously think she's gonna ask a teenager to the dance?"
Enid deflates, realisation dawning her features as she winces. "Oh, right. I forgot. Sorry." She says sincerely to you, but you laugh and wave it away, shaking your head.
"It's okay," You fold your arms atop the table, shrugging. "I'm honestly okay with skipping the whole thing."
This looks like it breaks Enid's heart, even Wednesday sends you a furrowed brow and tilted head; but her knowing look has you clearing your throat and looking away, like she knows more than she lets on.
Like she knows the reason that no matter how much you secretly wouldn't mind going, you cant, because Marilyn is; and seeing her dressed up and watching you will have you powerless to any mistake you could make that night.
"Interesting." Wednesday hums.
"What?! You can't not go!" Enid exclaims, biting her lip. "Come on," She whines, putting on those puppy dog eyes that you know works with her girlfriend. It's unsettling knowing you were using that same tactic not long ago. "You can come with Wednesday and I!"
