Thunder comes out in harmony with the rain, and you don't think the weather could be more appropriate than now as it rocks against your emotions, sends lightening up your spine.
You're still under Marilyn's umbrella and the sealed letter is enclosed in your grip now, pressed against your chest as you shut your eyes tight. Marilyn's free hand is at your bicep, rubbing softly, and her voice is the only thing getting you through this moment.
"Remember our exercise, darling girl." Marilyn prompts softly, and it makes that breath caught in your chest exhale into a wisp of cold air as you relax. You shiver, stepping forwards slightly and seeking the other woman's body warmth. You don't have to open your eyes to know Marilyn smiles at the action.
It's second nature to you then, that the practices Miss Thornhill taught you to shift come to the forefront of your mind.
Ever since you first succeeded, shifting is so much easier, yet it's not something you can just, switch to. And it's still a little bit slightly fucking frustrating, but you take solace in the fact that the one thing that will always work, and the one thing your abilities now rely on, is the step-by-step guide Marilyn taught you.
And you're trying to employ them now, you really are, but that tiny seed of doubt has come back ever so slightly. Furrowing your brows, you feel that familiar gut pull of your shifting, but it fades away, because your mind keeps pulsating around you that: Wednesday is your friend. Wednesday is your friend. Wednesday is your friend. Wednesday is your friend-
Marilyn's hand trails down from your bicep to your hand holding the letter, thumb rubbing soothingly; and something else comes through.
Wednesday is your friend, but you're Marilyn's.
At the thought, you shakily breathe out, worrying your bottom lip and furrowing your brows. The rain is still steady, and thunder rumbles through the sky.
"Mari? Can you..." You start, swallowing your hesitance away, because Marilyn's hand is so warm on yours. "Can you please walk me through it? I can't-I can't focus." You softly breathe out.
Eyes still closed; you instantly relax when the other woman's hand comes up to cup your cheek softly. Maybe you should be worried that now, you can only shift because of Miss Thornhill, that your body is refusing unless you feel her touch – but like always, the thought drifts away when you hear her speak.
"Of course, baby." She sounds a little amused, and you blush against her palm. "Just listen to my voice." Your shoulders relax instantly. "Not the rain, or the thunder, or the cars, only me. Can you do that for Mommy, sweet girl?"
Breath hitching, you nod immediately, a faraway and dazed "Uh huh" leaves your lips and your hand tightens around the letter; and you're sinking down into that familiar headspace she puts you in. You feel a little untethered, because you're still reeling from how she treated you when she first got here in this alleyway with you.
"Remember, we start with what we can see." Marilyn prompts, her hand coming up to smooth over the ridge of your eyebrow. It makes your eyebrow twitch, belly warming at her touch. "What does Wednesday look like, honey?"
You hum, frowning as you think. An image of Wednesday in the grass with Enid at Nevermore last week pops into your mind; it's sunny, warm, and she's trying to hide a smile as the blonde leans back against Wednesday's front reading some comic book Enid is making her sit through. But Wednesday doesn't seem as bothered as usual, she's only looking at Enid, anyways.
"Um, dark hair. Brown eyes. She has bangs, and two plaits." You list off, tilting you head as you detail Wednesday's features. A concentrated look forms across your face, one Marilyn smooths away by cupping your cheek again and making you blush.
