'This will be a seven long year mission and that may very well be your last. I hope you understand.'
A woman sat across a child, her fingers interlocked, observing, her eyes watching as if looking at a prey.
Outside the window, the sun was about to set, looking brilliantly red across the valley.
The woman stood over, took out a page and pen from her drawer and passed it to the young child sitting across her table.
She looked over the child. The child with the long dark hair had eyes the colour of Amber. When you look into her eyes it could make you feel as if they contained the setting sky. But that was it, she looked just like everyone else in her age group, a normal 12 year old.
A soft clicking of the wall clock could be heard across the room, a kettle was put to a boil at a corner, whistling softly. Behind that closed door, the footsteps of people grew fainter and fainter.
The young girl nodded, took the pen and signed on the page.
'Nara'
It was written in clear, concise letters.
The older woman nodded in satisfaction, 'Charlie will be assigned for this mission too and in the next 2 years we may send some more backups for you. You'll spend a long time there. Pray that you don't forget your original motive.'
'Yes, mother'
There was a sign of resignation yet at the same time a hint of growing anger in her young voice.
Outside in the corridor, the temple bells had begun to chime. It was time for the evening prayers.
The woman smiled, patted her dark head and said,'Good Luck, my darling, and don't forget to come back during summers. Ben will take you to the airport later. Ask him your queries,' she looked at the darkening sky, 'You can leave now.'
Nara stood up and moved across the room like a shadow. Her footsteps made no sounds against the tiled floors.
It gave you an eerie feeling that she wasn't really a living being but a ghost; but at the same time the small hand that touched the doorknob was warm. The cold sensation that the child felt was more than enough proof that she was alive.
She closed the door behind her and looked over the sky, now completely dark, sighed softly and started walking over the softly lighted corridor.
Her dark hair swayed gently with her movements as the sounds of frogs from a nearby pond grew louder and louder.
