You didn't get back home until the early hours of the morning, but Do-Yun still waited up for you. He even prepared you a plate of food, ready to be popped into the microwave the second you walked in the door.
Exhaustion must have been clear by your expression, the way you carried yourself, because he didn't push you.
"Do you want to talk about it tonight?" He asked, low and slow like he was trying to comfort a wounded animal. "We ought to talk about it, but it doesn't have to be now."
You didn't answer right away, thought it over for a long time as you shuffled over to the dining room table. He was right: you should talk about what happened. And the conversation wouldn't get better with time.
"Now is good," you sighed, deciding to just rip off the bandage.
"So, how did it go?" His question came a little too fast. Was that out of concern or plain curiosity? You chose to believe the former.
You started with, "Mr Choi offered me a job."
Do-Yun's eyes widened in shock. Then he let out a humorless little chuckle. "I don't suppose it was an office job, was it?"
"No, but it's not sex work either." Well, to be fair, he hadn't specified. But you weren't going to fuck Ha-Joon anymore. If you shouldn't stick your dick in crazy, it goes without saying that you shouldn't let crazy eat your pussy either. "He wants me to be a caretaker for his daughter."
"Isn't Ha-Joon a little old for a nanny?"
"She is. But she has no friends, no mother, and her father is always busy. She needs someone, and unfortunately she's imprinted on me."
"Did you accept?" Then, to clarify, "The job offer, I mean."
"I did. He didn't give me much of a choice." You didn't explain further, tell him the QT CEO had threatened Do-Yun's life. Instead, you just let the statement hover in the air like cigarette smoke.
Your fiance was silent --worryingly so-- for a while. He took time to think over his next words, which you happily afforded him. "I wish you had talked to me first," he whispered at last.
"I know. But he put me on the spot." There were tears in your eyes and a hint of a whine in your tone. You just felt so helpless.
He walked over to you and pulled you into his arms, letting you bury your face in his shirt and breathe him in as he rubbed soothing circles into your back. "I'm not going to lie and say I'm completely comfortable with it, but... I trust you to keep it professional, to do right by me."
Your heart swelled in your chest. You were expecting a big fight. To be met with such acceptance... He really was a good man. "I will," you promised. "I love you."
This was a serious relationship milestone for you. Despite already being pregnant and engaged, you still hadn't said I love you... Until now.
Without hesitation, Do-Yun answered, "I love you too. Always have and always will."
That's when the tears really started to fall. He gently shushed you, petting your hair as you sobbed into his chest.
Once you were all cried out, the two of you looked over the employment contract... Not that it did you much good now that you already signed it. There was sick leave but no maternity leave. So juggling two babies --one fully grown and one fresh out of the womb-- was going to be an issue in the imminent future.
"He wants you to put mothering your own children on hold so you can mother his," your fiance muttered under his breath. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
You weren't, but... "It's already been done." You'd just have to use your two weeks of paid vacation time right after the birth.
"The schedule is downright punitive! You can take any two consecutive days off a week, but you're expected to work sixty hours the rest of the week. That's twelve hours a day!"
"I just have to make myself available during those hours. Ha-Joon's a full-time college student, so she won't require full-time care the way a child might." At least, you hoped she didn't. Anything was possible, you supposed.
"He's offering to let you live in-house with his daughter as opposed to commuting every day. Are you going to?" He asked the question so lightly, but there was a heaviness behind his eyes.
You snorted. "Oh God, no." You weren't spending any longer with that horrible girl than absolutely necessary, and the requirements were already high.
That made him laugh. "I'm glad to hear it. We'd barely see each other anymore if that was the case, and I like hanging out with you, even if we're just doing little things."
"I do too." The sex was good, but it wasn't just that. You liked Do-Yun as a person. It was almost surreal.
"It's going to be difficult, but we can make this work," he said before grabbing your hand and pressing a kiss to the back of it. "Don't worry."
Easier said than done.
