Top of her class, Sandy could have worked anywhere. But losing Sergio had left her mother and brother struggling. 

So she went back to New York, back to the Bronx to help and to heal. 

She cleaned houses with Mami. Then took a job as a bartender and waitress. 

Working at Flats Fix a master class in low-wage work, immigrant labor, and the treatment of women in the workplace. As always, Sandy was an excellent student. 

She was also an activist. 

Canvassing for progressive candidates, she learned that change was made by those who organize.  

By feet, pounding pavement, and knocking on doors. 

By showing up and speaking up for her community.
