Grayson

The lock explodes, wood splintering in all directions.

I jolt, throwing my hands up to shield myself from the spray. The pirates couldn't have made it this far already. There have been no sounds of battle from outside the door, only in the distance. There is no way they could have made it to the gates yet, let alone past them.

The door bursts open and a pirate leaps into the room.

I blink, taking in her appearance. She holds a pistol in one hand and a cutlass in the other, and I don't doubt she can use both. Her dark eyes gleam with fierce determination. They lock onto me and she lobs the now empty pistol straight at my head.

I duck and it clangs off the wall behind me.

Two more pistols peek out of her black jacket, their dull metal handles reflecting the yellow light of the lantern. A red scarf sweeps her long black hair back out of her face and she glares at me.

Her gaze goes over my shoulder to the door behind me, the entrance leading down to the dungeons.

I draw my sword.

Her eyes narrow. "Step aside."

"I cannot," I say, with a resigned sigh. I really do not want to fight her.

A pirate she may be, and clearly able to use that sword, which is obvious from her stance, but she is still...well...a girl.

I have trained with the finest soldiers in the Aurellian Guard. I really don't want to hurt a girl. Pirate or no.
