from ever since bonita was a little girl, the football pitch seemed eerily big. she still thought it was extremely overwhelming every time she played.
joao had a completely opposite perspective of the field. he always felt that the field was a place where he could feel open and free.
it was natural for bonita to feel envious of joao after he made his professional debut at the same age as her but get more spotlight because women's football was not as popular as men's football.
bonita had a late start because her parents didn't want her to pursue football but rather focus on studies. it wasn't until she was 12 that they finally let her join the barcelona academy to train to be a football player.
getting into the academy was difficult at times but bonita passed the examinations flawlessly, especially since she was already a star player on her school's football team. unfortunately for her, star players from across the country were attending this school so she had a high probability of not being able to sign to a team.
but she was fast.
being fast and in full control of the ball was what bonita excelled in. that was her strategy at winning every time but the problem was that others outshined her talents so she was pushed aside. she was only able to make 4 goals for barcelona b in 2 years time.
kept in the shadows, she was forced to train harder so that she could perform well when the time came.
when it did, she performed with all her might utilizing her speed to weave through players on the field.
she made her professional debut in 2017, when she was 17 years old, after joining the barcelona team. her grandpa was the only one supportive of her career choice. her parents only knocked her down for it.
he was so supportive that he took her as his plus one to qatar to cheer on for portugal, the team he was coaching.
yes, bonita's grandfather is fernando santos.
since it was offseason, she decided to go with him but only if she could travel on her own because she didn't want to stay with the rowdy pack of football players. she didn't want to be the only woman on a bus full of men who's egos were growing due to the mass amount of support they were receiving during the world cup.
when she finally met her grandpa at the team base camp, he had the biggest smile on his face.
"there's my bonita" he smiled greatly as he embraced the smiling bonita, "my star player"
she laughed as she hugged him tighter, "i missed you avô"
"ohh" he groaned as he backed away, "it's been too long"
the team base camp that the team used to train was huge with the multiple fields that they use to practice. every time she saw the new camp, she was filled with envy as she watched them practice on such a nicely funded place.
"now, the new players this year are pretty good." he told her as they approached the field where the players were already warming up, "tell me which one you like the most, yes?"
she shrugged and adjusted the strap on her duffel bag, "okay"
she always came in her regular clothes on the first day of practice, just to understand each player and their tactics. the second day, she would come in leggings and a hoodie so that she was still mobile but not entirely immersed. the third day was when one of the players would invite her to join when she was in leggings and a t-shirt.
for now, she had a pair of baggy cargos on with a flared long sleeve shirt and a zip up vest. she kept a pair of bulky black headphones around her neck and her hair down to warm herself from the cold weather of qatar.
