"I just can't believe that I have to be with her! Don't you think it's too dangerous for me?" Kita ko ang mumunting luha sa mga mata ni Brooke habang mahigpit na nakahawak sa kanyang kubyertos.
She never liked me. Maybe because I almost burned her alive when we were young... or maybe because my clumsiness almost set our house on fire... or maybe because I almost cause a huge chaos in our village just because I couldn't contain my power.
"Mom!" sigaw niya, pilit na ipinaiintindi kay Mom ang gustong masabi.
"Do you still remember how she burned my hair when we were young?"
"Brooke... Do you remember how you used your power to extinguished that fire? The reason why I'm sending your twin sister to your school is to control her powers... And I hope you help her. You're twin after all." Marahan ang pag-himas ni Mom sa likod ng palad ni Brooke.
"Mom, pagod na pagod na po akong maging taga-apula ng sunog na ginagawa niya. Besides, masaya naman siya sa pagiging homeschooled. 'Di ba, Ember?"
Brooke looked at me. She's really conflicted. She doesn't really want me. I understand her frustrations, though. Kung ako rin siya at may kapatid akong puro sakuna lang ang naidudulot, mapapagod din ako.
Hindi ako nakasagot. Yumuko ako dahil ang totoo ay gustong-gusto ko. Buong buhay ko ay dito na sa bahay umikot ang buhay ko. Gusto ko ring maranasan ang mag-aral sa totoong paaralan.
Sabi nila ay ang Arcane Academy ay ang may pinakamataas na success rate when it comes to magic assessment. Maraming paaralan ang nagbibigay ng parehong serbisyo pero Arcane Academy lang talaga ang bukod tangi.
Malaki ang tuition fee sa Arcane Academy kaya kung hindi mayayaman ay may mangilan-ngilang full scholar ang nag-aaral dito. Maraming nangangarap na makapasok pero bilang lang ang nagtatagumpay.
"We already talked about it, Brooke. Your sister wants to join the Academy. I already talked to the headmaster and they suggested to make you roommates."
Sa buong pag kain namin ng almusal ay kitang-kita ko ang panggigigil sa mukha ni Brooke.
Umalis sandali si Mom para kumuha ng kape at doon na nga sumabog si Brooke.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Ember?"
"Gusto ko lang namang maranasan ang mga nararanasan mo."
"Well, to tell you honestly, you will never! Malamang ay sunugin mo lang ang buong paaralan dahil tatanga-tanga ka pa naman!" Kumalabog ang mesa dahil sa biglaang pag-hampas niya rito at pagtayo. "I'll make sure you'll end up locking yourself here again, Ember. So you won't tarnish my school reputation! I don't want anyone to know that my twin sister is a clumsy fire hazard!"
Umalis siya nang hindi ako hinihintay. Paano ba naman kasi... pag-gising na pag-gising niya ay nakita ako sa mesa na nakasuot ng uniporme na kagaya niya. Nagalit siya nang nilihim pala ni Mom sa kanya na magiging dorm mates kami sa Arcane at ayaw niya no'n.
Actually, kahit dito sa bahay ay hindi kami iisa ng kwarto. May sarili siyang kwarto dahil ang sabi niya ay mausok ako at bigla-bigla na lang nagpapaliyab ng kung anu-ano.
"Mom, I'm sorry..." iyon na lang ang tangi kong nasabi.
"Darling... I know you have a lot of power within you, and I want you to remember that with great power comes with great responsibility. You have to be careful with your powers, especially with fire, as it can be destructive if not handled properly. Don't let the other students' opinions of you bring you down, and always remember that you have a unique gift that can help others. Use it wisely and be proud of who you are."
