It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but it was deeper than that. A sense of belonging to a place I never knew I wanted but somehow always needed. It was a home that carried a heartbeat.

Nikki Rowe

Detective Koal:
I saw the boy crying in the grass, I picked him up. I saw the burning house. And then I see the burned figure of a woman next to him. Dead and gone already, how she got out here I could take a guess as I glance at the girl next to her. I radio in my findings.

I might be guessing here but by the looks of it the girl saved the baby, dragged her mom out but considering the woman is dead she didn't make it. And the file said a family of four lived here. So there must be a dad in the house. Probably dead too. Then the girl passes out due to her burns. Writing all this in a notepad.

What I can't figure out is how this fire started. This girls clothes look black holed and burned. Her hair is ash fallen and dirty, her body a mix of burns and ashen grey as well.

"Detective! Is that a baby your holding?" Angie, a beautiful blonde hair blue eyed paramedic I had gotten to know asks me. She must have seen the sleeping child in my arms still asleep. I was doing my best rocking the baby. With no luck as he was waking up.

"Could I maybe help you with him? He looks a little smoky. Plus your rocking him to fast." She looks at me expectedly. I look down and see she's right he was sporting the gray marks on his body but no signs of burns and he's still crying. I must have drowned him out somehow. That girl was pretty brave taking a double rescue mission on.

I watch the paramedic as she cleans the kid up and starts rubbing some cream on him. She see's me watching and smiles "it's to help smooth his tired body and makes sure if he has burns it soothes them". She gives me a goodbye telling me to get another paramedic over here for the teenager, she then walks away with the kid.
Definitely need to get her number later.

I walk over to the girl who seems to be waking up. She has an oxygen mask on her face put there by the fire men. She looks up at me.

She looks weak, but seeing as how she she has  dragged her mom out after getting her brother out, there's a strength in her that I haven't seen in a long time in anyone her age.. I know then and there that I shouldn't take her lightly. In her eyes I see something like myself. Seeing her tiny frail like this saddens me. She has danger in her eyes, trouble as she stares at me.

I don't think she was at fault here. I stick a sleeping agent needle into her neck. I then pick her up. I cover for myself when anyone asked where I was going with her. I told them I was going to take her to the hospital myself seeing as I could be faster in getting her treatment. They argued with me but my stubborn attitude and glares shut them up. The fact that I was a detective not to be questioned might have helped to. I also told them they can call my boss if they have problems with it. That bought them over.

I need to get her far away from here. She can then run away. After she heals up of course. Whatever her choices, I need to be able to help her.. I set her in the back seat of my car.

Covering her up with a blanket I had on my floor boards. I then drove her to my house. I was going to take care of her until she can move about on her own.

Of course  I would question her when the time came but right now she needed a stable place to recoup without the fear. I know I'm going to be questioned myself later by the chief for the missing girl. But I can handle that myself.
